Cliffy, I think the 70%maxWHR approach it is harder when you live in hillier areas - particulalrly when starting out on this training approach. When I started the HRM approach, I did all my 70% training runs on a treadmill - pretty much as soon as I get out of our fron door, there are 1:5 hills in all directions! I'd have to echo IanM's comment - and I'm sat at my desk thinking the same as BB!

Ian - coming the weekend after my Boston London marathon double, I think it's not one for me!!
But mainly because I will be embarrassed about showing my face in public after FLM

BB, I know you are clearly a LOT fitter than me but it's good to hear re: Tempo runs, I mentioned earlier about my intervals this morning, I was killing myself on the 400m reps and walking/jogging 200m recoveries and I never got above 170.
My resting HR I took yesterday morning was 49/50, and 205 - half age is 189. so 70% WHR is 147, and 85% is 168. I was maxing at 170 and averaging 158 this morning. There is no way I could have put in any more effort to get HR above 170 without my legs giving way.

That's a good sign, Lums.
But this HR training is pointless without knowing your actual Max. Go out and figure it out (did mine on treadmill hill intervals), then you will know exactly what your levels are. My theoretical max was 192, but actual is 203. So if I had not done the test I would not be training anything like hard enough

By the way, intervals, expecially short ones like 400s, should be done at 90%+, according to Parker
