Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

For a bit of context the max I use for training zone purposes is 169-172. I'm erring toward changing it on here to something lower.

I'm afraid the bad news, Brunski, is ... you're very fit.

I'm a little surprised your max is that low but everyone's different etc. There is quite a range of max hrs in people which seems to correspond little with either age or fitness. There is a drop over time, but if you are in shape (a bit, at least) it may not be much.

For example, about ten years ago, I settled on my max hr being 196 BPM. Recently having access again to hr data (new watch), I've seen 190 and max could be a couple of beats more. To state the obvious, I am in nowhere near the shape you are.

HOD, I had noticed. Are you using a chest strap or a wrist monitor?

Well to be honest my view is don't draw any conclusions based on the wrist monitor. I stopped relying on mine for running purposes quite some time back.

thanks for the recommendations folks, I'll look in to them.

Brunski - I echo the other comments. When I've been really unfit, coming back from injury, then I've got right up close to HR max pretty readily. When fit, it's a different story.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking WW/Dvorak. However I'd like to be able to access that HR, maybe a bit of strength work might help, or maybe I need to do more high intensity stuff to get used to being in that anaerobic zone.

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
