:( - Oh dear IanM it will make me very sad. I'm going to start ploughing through my credit card statements now to see if I can find the purchase date. I think it was April....

OK clever HRM fans, I need a hand with some time calculations for my debut in FLM 2007. Can you help? I've made some massive improvements in running times by working with a HRM monitor and now 60 to 70% of all my running is done at 70% or less of my mwhr. This calculates out at a fairly steady 9:45 - 10:00 min miles unless there are loads of hills on my run.

I ran a half marathon recently with farily consistant 9:00 miles @80% Mwhr finishing in 01:59:04

My most recent 10K was ran @85% mwhr finishing in 52:53 (8:32 pace)

I'm planning on running FLM at 70% mwhr, at this stage of my training I think that will be 10:00 min miles. I've 5 LSR's to go before my taper. 16 miles today, then 3 x 18 miles, the Reading 1/2m & 20 miles in Worthing on 1st April.

With all this useful information to hand ... what time do you think I'll be at the 22 mile post to meet the Fetchie Fantanstic Four Support Crowd. Cheers! (what would I do without you all :) )

My HRM was playing up again yesterday. I've cleaned the strap thoroughly again so hoping it wil be better on Tuesday. It was a bit of a nuisance yesterday as it was 8 miles of up and down HR so I never actually knew what I was doing. Just tried to keep the pace down as much as I could.

MT,

Hope your Garmin is behaving itself again.

Sounds as if you've got a very good plan for FLM - one which should ensure that you'll get to the 22mile point in fine fettle - as opposed to overdoing it at the start/1st half of the race and then hanging on until the finish (says he who has never done a marathon!)

Carry on with the good work!

Rebel,

That must be so annoying. I had a 'problem' with my HRM a month or so ago - I was getting a silly/very high reading for the 1st mile of a run, then it would settle down back to normal - sorted by soaking the sensor with water, rather than just a bit of saliva! Thankfully no problems since (touch wood) - particularly given the importance of the HRM to my training approach.

Hope you get it sorted v soon.

MT - you have similar times to me but for a lower HR.

My HM was a hilly one when I was ill 8.43/mile 89% WHR
havnt done a 10km with HRM but 7 mile race was 8.22/mile 91% WHR
Havnt really done enough LSR in the correct range and havnt been doing HRM training for long but did 12 miles last week 72% 9.37/mile
I am thinking of doing FLM (my first as well) @ 75% which I expect to be around 9.30/mile. I expect that may work out to be similar to your 70% pace. I have put down 3.50 to be at the fetchies support point as I am not sure how long it will take to get over the start line. - we are both in team 4!!
Since I am new to HRM training I will prob change my goals/pace after each long run as there is still a couple of months to go.
Also, I have picked up a achilles prob this week so everything may go to pot. Am planning 20 miles today but not sure if that will happen.

Did 11m at 77% today (9:19 min/miles) Is this working too hard? I tried to keep it nearer 70% but felt like I was crawling along. Is a LSR at 70% considered a hard or easy workout?

LSR are considered hard because they deplete your glycogen stores. 77% is too high. I used to do that and after about 6 weeks of LSR at that level I got injured

Hi Hellen

Thanks for that. I set the HR alert to beep at me at 70% and it was so frustrating - I had to turn it off!

Oh OK, if it's still considered a hard workout when at 70% then I might try and slow it down a bit. It's going to be hard doing this with 17miler next weekend because the girl I am planning to run with is fitter and faster (she has been running for 3 years though!) but I will try and keep it steady.

Did you get out today?

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
