Does anyone know of and cure for the symptoms of hay fever that don't make you drowsy? Normal hay ever tablets seem to completely knock me out and the non-drowsy ones still make me drowsy, though not quite as bad as the normal ones. I seem to be sneezing non-stop and have watery eyes and it makes it difficult at work and is generally annoying, I would like something to get rid of it without needing to sleep all day. Any ideas of what I can use? Thanks folks.

I take the one-a-day tablets that you can get from Boots. They don't make me drowsy even though tablets like Piriton used to. I find that it's actually the hay fever itself that makes me drowsy & even forgetful.

Good luck, sharing your pain.

Beconase- steroid nose spray.
Doesn't help if you get skin symptoms, but for sneezing and watery eyes it works well.

I use the full assault when it gets bad: cetirizine (never felt drowsy on them), beconase nasal spray and eye drops as well.

My son has it bad at the moment as well. Every year he gets an eye infection from rubbing his itchy eyes with grubby little hands. So we are now on antibiotic drops instead.

Thanks for the suggestions - beconase sounds quite useful, thanks Johnny , I might try that as hopefully at least if it doesn't work it shouldn't put me to sleep. The symptoms aren't that bad and most of the time I manage without anything but it's the sneezing really - it gets irritated and I end up sneezing about 10 times in a row! Not good if your speaking to someone at the library desk.

Sorry to hear your Son has a hard time too HP, and you WW, hopefully it'll be gone for us all soon.

Smallest has developed a problem with hayfever this last couple of years. The stuff prescribed by the doc (Loratidine?) didn't seem to help and he hated the nasal spray. At the moment we're doing Piriteze - dosage for his age is half a tablet day and night. I discovered by accident a few weeks ago that a whole tablet seems to help him more for longer but he doesn't get a full 24 hours out of it. I'm now wondering whether increasing the dosage is a completely bad idea? He's an otherwise healthy very-nearly 10 year old with no apparent allergies other than the hayfever. Would it be likely to damage him in any way if we upped the dosage to a whole tablet in the morning and again at night?

Our chemist gave us some of that yesterday JenL - she thought it was worth trying something different. The box says max adult dose is one a day. Sadly QP is under 30kg by a long way so too wee to use it (and he is 11). I know that the cetirizine we both have is one full tab in morning for me, but half and half for QP. It's a mystery!

Thanks, HP. I was wondering because a pharmacist once told me to start doses of antibiotics for children with a double shot and it made me think there might be some possibility of dosage variation for children as they get closer to the "upper level" for children. But I suppose if the adult dose for hayfever is just 1 tablet... :-(

try the nasal spray on him again, JenL. There's a knack to the nasal spray, you need to squirt it up your nose and then stick your head between your knees so it trickles down your nose for the best effect, he may like that bit. I take Beconase and cetirizine and except for the very worst time (April) it does the trick. You could also try more than one type of antihistamine, I find loratidine doesn't work for me but there are other types. I reckon you should chat to your GP or pharmacist and see what else Smallest can try. Ds1 just developed hay fever for the first time last year, this year he has just started snuffling so I'm giving him some antihistamines as a precaution, but he seemed to suffer most with his eyes, so the eye drops are most effective on him, I haven't bothered giving him a nasal spray.
