I'm not really a Grammar Nazi. I just enjoy cosplay at the weekend.

Thanks to JenL, Columba and Dvorak - yes, I did mean apostrophe! Thanks. I'm proof reading, so don't want to change the author's intentions - speech reveals character - but wanted ammunition to argue against that second ' in case anyone queried my assertion that its just wrong, sorry, can't explain why...

This is neither grammar nor pedantry, but I came across a lovely new word yesterday:

Anticipointment

(Maybe should start a thread called "neologisms")

A linguist friend of mine has several of these in regular use, including "administrivia" (senseless but obligatory paperwork), "administrauma" (the emotional response to too much paperwork) and "hallistenation" (imposing one's own, inaccurate, meaning on what one has heard another speaker say).

She's also very good at coming up with alternative definitions for existing words, my favourite being "negligence" (the act of wearing flimsy lingerie and not caring about it :-) ).

Anyone remember a column called "Oddly enough" - was in the Observer, I think, written by Paul Jennings. He suggested alternative meanings for place names; e.g. a Bodmin is one-sixtieth of a man-hour.

Douglas Adams and John Lloyd did that in The Meaning of Liff.
