Might be just a "me" thing, but I've got all (and I mean all!) my photos backed up for free with Google photos. I've also got the face recognition thing turned on so, for example, I can search Joseph (son #3) and it auto-magically finds all photos with him in it (even though I've not tagged a single one), even from when he was a baby. I can't even recognise him at that stage!

Anyway, I've also discovered that it does keyword searches. Obvious stuff like "beach" or "sunset" bring out photos that look like these things.

Getting curious, I wondered how deeply the keyword tagging had gone, and it's scarily good.

For example, I search "brocolli" and one random photo with a plate with some brocolli on it appears.

Search "dessert" and meals with pudding items appear. "Sponge" is more specific and just brings back pictures of victoria sponge birthday cakes.

Clarinet brings back a few photos of my boys playing a tune, including videos. "Fuel" brings back photos of my car's dash, meter readings and some under the bonnet photos that I must have taken when I had a car problem.

All of this without me lifting a finger to tag anything.

What random words can you search for in your google photos and be surprised about what it's tagged?

Location is the scary one ... how does it know where some places are (and not by GPS tags)

But I struggle when I know it's missing some photos. eg people it does know, or things like 'aeroplane'. I haven't worked out how to get it to re-search / tag batches of photos.

Downside - what I really hate is the way it guesses the time zone and often gets it wrong. My photos are tagged with a time, why can't it use that? But it seems to prefer to randomly allocate GMT or BST at whim. Even in 12 photos in sequence, it will put some an hour out.

I can still never find the one I want, I have to work out the date by searching for something else, then search by date!

I filter mine before loading to Google Photos, so only move around 20% of actual photos there, and store them (well, tag them) in albums, year and place, eg "2020 New Forest", "2020 Whiteparish", "2019 Sydney" etc. So I can get half way to most pics quite quickly.

I do have them all on my laptop (80,000, stored by year and month, no tags, 'best 15k in a gallery folder, by year and pace/event, matching the Google Photos albums), and find an interesting contrast between the Google search and the Microsoft Photos search. Not sure either is better, just different. Although MS does allow english to be used.

Fragile Do Not Bend
I don’t have my photos on google but the keyword search on my iPad seems to be just as good. Mushroom found photos of fungi, but fungus and toadstool didn’t work.

However when I started typing in toadstool, it correctly identified a toad, despite it being almost the same colour as the background. If I typed in frog it didn’t bring up the photo.

Toadstool brought up some fungus, plus some kids chairs shaped to look like toadstools!

Locations are outstanding. I've got some pre GPS photos taken in front of the Matterhorn. And it knows where they were presumably by identifying three big mountain in the background.

I just let my phone (my main camera) upload everything, so I've got all sorts on there.

I discovered "ceramic" returned images of bowls and toilets.

On the other hand ‘food’ and ‘clothes’ weren’t very accurate.

The great thing about google photos is you don’t need to sort as it does it automatically- Feb 16 brings up Those photos.
