Hi all, I fractured the cuboid bone of my right foot on the 10th March, spent 2 weeks on crutches 5 weeks in a boot total, foot is still a bit achy now and its 13 May, I have been told I need to be able to walk without pain for 1 hour before I even think about running, has anyone got any experience of this or any tips please, I am sore after just 15 mins at the moment. Feel like a sloth!

Hi - glad to hear you're on the mend. Did the doctor/hospital give you any indication of how long it might take to be able to walk pain-free?

Nelly - Hi - I had a stress fracture in April last year and like you had a boot on - I had crutches for 2 weeks and then a plaster cast for about 3 weeks. I got the same advice that I wasn't to even contemplate running until I could walk for 60 mins pain free. I stuck with their recommendation and built up the walking over a 2.5 week period. Admittedly I was on sick leave/holiday for part of this so was able to get out for a little stroll every day. I had my cast off on 24 May and did a 10-15 min walk the next day - although I did use the crutches to take some of the weight off. I sued the crutches for about 3 days post cast removal. I did my first run - 1 mile on the treadmill - on 17 June after managing 1.5 hours of walking a couple of days earlier. I managed to come back quicker form the break than I did from many of the muscle injuries I've had as essentially one the break has healed its sorted. I think they say you have to be able to walk pain free as that is the indication the bone has healed. I was able to build back up and managed to run the Thunder Run (I did 5X10K laps) at the end of July. Admittedly I probably wouldn't recommend such a big jump up but it worked for me. Since having the 2.5 months off and coming back I have smashed all my PBs so an enforced rest can actually give the rest of your body a rest and you can come back stronger.

Is your foot achey where the break was or is it just your foot generally? It could be the tendons etc just aching through reduced use?

I fractured and had a subluxation (apparently like a dislocation but not quite?! I don't know but that's what the doc said) of the cuboid playing badminton a couple of years ago and it took me longer than it should have to return to running, I didn't really follow the advice given and so deserved the delay really. Yeah, just follow the doc's advice, same kind of thing as you've been told. It might take a bit of time but better to get there at the right time and in one piece..!

Jovi it is definitely at the break site, pin point, its is still bruised as well and swells when I have been stood a while, I think it may be a long job, so fed up!

I broke the 5th metatarsal in one of my feet a couple of years ago. I broke it Jan 23 2011. Had to have it pinned. I wore a boot/splint thing for 4 weeks after that. During that time I found I could manage short sessions on our exercise bike. I had a couple weeks more mobilising then in early March got back to training. I ran a half marathon, first weekend in May.
I'd go back to your doctor if I were you. My doctor told me it when was ok to exercise on my bike and when it was ok to start running again. Hope you can start to recover soon.
