He (Southgate) never ever beat a good team when it mattered. Had easy draws and people think he was 'special'?

I’ve blogged on Southgate twice.

Does beating the Netherlands in the euro semis not count as a big team when it mattered?

Here's a full list of all England managers who beat a 'big' team in a euros or wc finals outside of England.

Germany at Euro 2020 doesn’t count, because they weren’t a good German side.

Croatia in the group stages at Euro 2020 because they were past it.

Italy home and away in the qualifiers?

I think there’s a lot of ‘well if England beat them they must have been shit’ going on.

I know it's not cool to have any interest in the FIFA and UEFA rankings because they're clearly bollocks etc. BUT they are used to seed qualifying groups and tournament groups.

We keep being told that under Southgate we never played anyone good until late stages of tournaments. It's arguably true, but that's because we won more games against decent opposition in ranking matches, improved out ranking position, and got seeded as top seeds in all the groups.

That wasn't an accident, it wasn't coincidence or luck, and it wasn't done consistently by any of the previous England managers.

The ranking system may be a bit of a joke but if it has an impact on your chances of progressing (and ultimately winning) tournaments then taking it seriously is a sign of professionalism from a manager, and Southgate was nothing if not professional.

And whilst I'm absolutely not up for bashing Carsley I do think declaring him the new Messiah and saying England have "Finally taken the handbrake off" after 3 days with the squad and 45 minutes against RoI is a bit premature, particularly given that the second half wasn't anything but controlled.

Ah, the beautiful game, remember that? Let's put down some jumpers and have a socially-distanced kickabout. Long shots only, and no hugging and kissing.
