Just the 168 runners entered for this evening.... Only slightly more than double our previous record attendence. We've had a slight headache in how to arrange the start with so many numbers! (I was expecting a maximum of about 80 entries!) |

The race happened. It was enjoyed by all runners. We applied a novel method of preventing potential post-race covid transmission risks by 'arranging' a plague of midges. It was 'not fun' on the finish line. |

A while back, NE (I think) posted a picture of Crinkle Crags and the various tops. I was up there walking in the clag on Saturday and not sure if I hit all of them or not. Definitely manged the South Top, Long Top and Gunson Knott. Also went over something just North of Gunson Knott. I presume for peak bagging purposes, I can count Long Top as the high point ![]() Was following the main (rather indistinct trod) over the tops, but probably missed some of the smaller tops - visibility was ~50m for a lot of it. Made a major navigation error at the top of Bowfell and swung underneath the summit and got about 50m before I realised and had to double back. My excuse was that the visibility was very low at that point - there was compass work to pick up the route back off the top... |

(should note that I'd never been up any of the peaks I'd done previously - ticked off CC, Bowfell, Esk Pike, Allen Crags and Rosset Pike, before the interminable descent down Rosset Gill).

Fozzy, Yes indeed, I did post something along those lines but if I recall correctly it was on the Lake District Thread. The Crinkles are an interesting part of the Lake District and that's why I posted in the first place, a lot of people simply take in Long Top and assume that's the end of the story .... and of course it's not, despite what AW says ![]() For peak-bagging purposes, well, it can be a bit confusing. For the Wainwright it's just Long Top (the 2nd Crinkle from South to North), but Birkett recognises five separate tops (not including Shelter Crags) and counts them from South to North. Where it gets messy is in recognising precisely which top is Gunson Knott, do a bit of research and you'll find lots of sources that alternately claim it's the third or the fifth crinkle. Harold Street - which I suppose is the most authoritative source nowadays - hedges their bets and says that both are Gunson Knott. For myself, I think that most sources say it's the third top so that's what I'm going with ![]() Our own Mr Synge doesn't count all five Birketts, but DOES count the summit to the north of Shelter Crags. My original screenshot is below if that helps. Oddly enough I also was on Esk Pike, Allen Crags etc over the weekend. Was in a bit of a hurry though ![]() |
