Mac - most important thing is fit. They should be snug but not toe-crushingly tight. Really soft shoes are better for slab climbing, shoes with lateral stiffness are better on edges. Down - turned shoes are better on steeply overhanging routes. So for most people a reasonably neutral shoe (no downturn) that has decent edging and a god quality rubber is the best option.
