Well done Finn - I couldn’t see the green - the duck was far away and moving around a lot. Yep - it’s a teal. Thanks.

Great views of a barn owl quartering less than a mile from home this evening. They have become a common sight in our area

Seem to have been a lot of owls around lately, just recently I've seen barn owls coming out for the hunt in broad daylight. We've got one that must live very close to us, you can hear him/her hooting all night! I saw a big tawny the other day too :-)

Some of my recent dusk / evening runs feel like I've never heard as many owls before, certainly on such a regular basis

Paul, I've been told by someone who knows about owls that the reason we're seeing more of them is that they're hungry. Owls don't have waterproof feathers and when it rains a lot they can't hunt.

I love a good nature explanation especially one I wouldn't have known or consider, and that's a great explanation and one that can make so much sense when you're told it.

Great news for small mammals!

I think I hear owls in flight almost every night here where I’m staying in Miltonduff. Can’t see them tho’. Local person told me there’s a resident barn owl.

I would say if you can hear it in flight it almost certainly isn't an owl! Unless you mean the call.

It sounds interesting, but my AI doesn't agree - it's more that rain affects flight performance, visibility of prey, and ability to be stealthy. perplexity.ai
