Blackcap pair in the garden this morning here too but they’ve been here all winter. Nice sunny start to the day so I headed over to Chobham Common for a wander. Several lovely, noisy and amorous pairs of Stonechat but most pleased to get 2 very clear Dartford Warbler sightings. One hung around for a minute or so just to show off all that pink and the vivid red eye 😍 |

I am ashamed to say I wasn't even aware of the existence of Chobham Common until I stopped off there for a meetup and picnic on my way back from Wiltshire at the end of 2022. How could I have been unaware of the existence of such a large area of heath before? Great wildlife area, which I must explore more thoroughly some time.

It really wasn’t obvious to me before I moved down here that there are actually a lot of pockets / havens like Chobham Common around here. I don’t think you need be ashamed J2R! I’ve just joined the Surrey birding FB site and I’m learning of new spots all the time. I need to get over to Staines Moor where there are apparently a lot of SEO that are in full daytime display but it’s currently under water! I’m off to Elmley Nature Reserve at the weekend. Another spot full of nature in a less than obvious place. elmleynaturereserve.co.uk |

Youngest’s partner is currently working at rspb.org.uk - lots of Dartford warblers there. I’ve still never seen one of course

Staines Moor is really interesting WW. There is a path that runs down the side that used to be a railway and despite effectively being alongside a motorway it was one of the quietest runs we used to do around there. Mostly because the traffic is usually at a standstill 😂 Harmondsworth Moor is also interesting although a bit scummier in places as it gets a lot of rubbish dumping sadly. |

Oh and I love Donkey Wood if you're up near Heathrow. You can park along the A4 in the layby nearby and go right down Hounslow Heath along the river in the little sections. Egrets fairly common along there as well as adders on the Heath itself.

And thanks Curly. I’ve actually run across Staines Moor, Harmondsworth Moor and through Donkey Wood in the past on various occasions. I never used to see a lot while running, I must have been watching my feet too much. I feel that I actually see more when I’m out on the bike nowadays. Not sure that’s a good thing! Crane Park of the quick SW London parkrun is also full of wildlife amongst the shopping trollies. Anyway, I’ll go back. I’m always on the lookout for decent snake spots. |
