We were treated to a week's birding trip at Heatherlee last year, and it was good. The guides knew their stuff and were happy to share. It's also a nice place to stay with good food. Scenery's not too bad either :)

Lovely, Flanker. Sold! Their website and description of trips and hotel is warm and friendly, reflecting what you said.

Definitely winter here now. 100+ Pinkies over during yesterday morning's run, Woodcock calling from above the house yesterday evening and the Great Northern Diver returned to the Res over the weekend. There's Bramblings about as well but I've not spotted them yet.

Went out in search of Water rail today at Caerlaverock. Three were three seen as recently as this morning, but they were nowhere to be seen come lunchtime. Maybe next time.

I did see 8-12 tree sparrows mixed in with some house sparrows at the feeders. It was a busy scene, given the cold spell.

I also saw a pair of Yellowhammers which seemed to glow yellow in the frosty background.

Merry Christmas & Happy New G(rrr)
Hi, I was up in the Highlands yesterday (skiiing), and I saw a pair of soaring birds of prey that I don't think were buzzards - white under the wings, could they have been golden eagles?

Also seen: a mountain hare (white), ptarmigan (pretty common up there, but cool), deer (obviously), a hovering bird of prey (probably kestrel?). Beautiful conditions. :-) G

Very envious of that trip, Happy! I've never seen a ptarmigan in Britain.

Sounds like a fab trip Happy.

I saw Golden Eagles at a vast distance on Skye with a wildlife guide. But also learned that buzzards soar, which I hadn’t seen in Northumberland.
