Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

LEO

Lesser spotted woodpecker

Nightjar

Crossbill

Scoter - five on a localish reservoir this week. Seen some on sea, but basically black dots

Crossbills are another I'd love to see. Some near me but never had the chance to see them. And I've seen SEO chicks but most owls are up there for me. Just struggle for time to go out and find them.

DT, if you come looking for those Scoter give us a shout. We're wondering about a trip up there this weekend if the weather improves. Shame The White House isn't open!

Adding LSW and nightjar to my growing list.

DT, we share the LEO and LSW yearning. Nightjars are actually a quite easy spot here - there are two heaths I know of where you generally have a good chance of seeing (and hearing) them. Must get out there this month. Crossbills are another bird I've seen frequently abroad but only once here, a very surprising sighting I reported here, where they were in a pine tree by a pub on the coast. Because of my appalling duckism, I can't get too excited by scoter. It is, though, perhaps the most anagrammatic of all birds - escort, coster, corset, scrote(!).

I still need to get a book out. Two birds I’d like to see in breeding plumage - spotted redshank and ruffe

LEO.

Little Owl (nope not seen one!)
Nightjar.
Nightingale.
LSW.

We randomly had a scoter on our local reserve last year, and we’ve accidentally found crossbills twice in about a week of each other in different parts of the country....

Who wanted Green Woodies? - If you're ever heading down the A1 to that London, give me a shout, we have plenty!

Love that pic of the goldfinch - I've tried taking pics on my feeders and failed miserably.

Appear to have sparrows nesting in the dead honeysuckle I was planning on trimming and removing, that job will have to wait for a few weeks then!

My mentions were completely off the top of my head, I should say. I'm sure if I looked at a bird book there'd be loads of others I'd forgotten. I got such a thrill from seeing hawfinches for the first time a couple of years ago, and the birds I'm thinking of would give me the same feeling.

My wishlist:

White tailed eagle
Crested tit
LEO
LSW

I haven't picked my 5th yet - I'm lucky enough to have been birding for my entire life and travelled around Britain a fair bit, so my British life list isn't too shabby :-) I'm going to go through my books later though...
