That's a great article that needs a read when I'm more awake
I won't kill a wasp or hornet - I just don't like them buzzing around my kitchen!

Our starling hordes seem to have moved on for now. The blue tits chicks have been sitting on the branch next to the fat balls, quivering, whilst the parent flits between fat balls and chicks.

We saw the first goldfinch chick yesterday from our bedroom window. It was on the roof of our conservatory routing around in the moss. It was a strange looking thing with normal flight feathers but a ball of fluff up top!

And this morning, I did my first run for well over a month and was rewarded with the sound of a cuckoo.

Very overcrowded garden just now - starlings and their teenagers mobbing every feeder - about 20 jackdaws getting upset with the starlings lack of queueing - about 5 crows scavenging the bits of fat ball and mixed seeds the others are knocking down.
The jackdaws are very twitchy - any movement by a window and they're off, otherwise I'd have pictures. Toying with the idea of seeing if I can set up remote trigger of camera from my phone. Although would need to be focused on a specific feeder or wide angle shot of the lot.

Just when I said it was gone I heard a Robin again in the garden this morning! As for "early birds" and what calls/sings first it has to depend on the locality and time of the season of course!I used to regularly do a Dawn Chorus back in the early 1960's (yes, I'm old!) but in early Spring--Blackbird always beat Robin to starting singing (there was no artificial light in the locality) and on several occasions it was Skylark that began the morning's chorus off. Long Tailed Tit back in the garden this last day or two but after 7am it's almost like quiet mid summer.

Just went into the garden to see my fiancee. 2 dunnocks (havent seen them for a few weeks). She hadnt noticed. One of them looks quite scruffy, so not sure if it's just fledged or not. Flew off, so will wait for their return.

Here it seems to be the blackbirds which start the dawn chorus off, then robins.
