Kestrel, bullfinch, raven, several jackdaws and what I think was possibly a grey wagtail. Flew out from the bushes with a very yellow body.

Had an afternoon at Leighton Moss on Sat. There were bittern, beardies, otters and Garganey showing. We found none of them!

Did manage a good haul of woodland birds (great, blue, coal, and marsh tits, treecreeper, tree sparrow, bullfinch, goldcrest, chaffs, blackbirds and a wren). Along with winter thrushes, a selection of ducks and waterfowl, and some gorgeous marsh harriers.

The marsh tits were incredbily tame - happily grabbing food from a couple of feet away. Cute little things.

And, strangely, a barn owl over the M62 junction on the way home. You'd think it could find somewhere nicer to hunt!

Envious, flanker!

I confirmed again to myself yesterday than I'm really a birder, not a twitcher (which I already knew). Wife and I were out for a run on the coast, going past the Cley reserve, and there were loads of people with scopes (more than usual). I got chatting and a guy said there was an Isabelline wheatear a little way along from where we stood - I could see a clump of people, about 400 metres away, looking at something. But it was not on our route, so I decided not to bother going and taking a look, and we headed off inland.

Thinking about it afterwards, I was wondering why I wasn't bothered making the VERY short detour, and it was because it was for a bird that really didn't belong there, didn't in fact belong in this country at all. I'd have had a very different attitude if it had been an example of what I regard as a 'British' bird which I'd never seen, such a wryneck (I say that because they sporadically turn up along this coast in autumn). But what, in fact, is a 'British' bird? It's not simply one which breeds here, because there are many which are just winter visitors. So what makes a proper winter visitor, and why was this Isabelline wheatear not one? Is it because it was not its intention to be here, and that it has simply been blown off course, unlike, say, fieldfares and snow buntings, which make a beeline for these islands?

Thoughts on a postcard, please.

Highlights from my Sunday run were a grey wagtail and a buzzard.

Had a visit from a male bullfinch in the garden in the afternoon.
