Actually pretty much as far from the coast as it is possible to get Steve but i'm lucky enough to live on the edge of a reservoir which has good feeding areas for waders.
Did catch the diver flying around yesterday evening. Looks the bags are packed and it's ready for the off.

Best view of a kingfisher in ages today. I was able to stop and watch it for quite a while, perching on a branch over the river having just swallowed a little fish. I had my small binoculars in my backpack, so got a great view.

I didn't realise siskins were unusual. We have them on the feeders at school and at home.

HowFar, it depends where you live. I used to see them a lot in Scotalnd when I was younger but they were a reasonably uncommon sighting in Norfolk until quite recently. They tend to come to gardens late on in winter when their normal food supply in the countryside (such as alder cone seeds round here) is getting thin. In March a couple of years ago they were, for a while, the commonest bird on our feeders, but I've only seen a handful all winter this year.

I honestly don't think I've ever seen a siskin.

Siskins on my window feeder, and on the niger seed every day at the moment. Strange that I hardly saw any this winter, and then as soon as the days started to get longer they started turning up again.
Every time I see them I think how stunning they are. Not sure whether I think the males are more beautiful than the females.
Lots of alders around here that they seem to love.
Most winters I see redpolls with the siskins, but none this year. I wonder if it was just too warm.

The siskin are an absolute first for me hence the excitement, we're in North Wales. Another local first for me was seeing bullfinches in the local fields. The nearest I've ever seen them must be about ten miles away.
Whereabouts in Devon are you visiting DT?

I was a bit over zealous re Siskin..thinking about my own experience here in Cardiff. But Siskins breed through most of Scotland, Wales and much of northern and southwest England (detail from "Bird Atlas 2007-2011"). Since the 1968-72 Atlas which I remember too well (age and all that!) there has been a 166% increase in breeding distribution. Never had a Siskin at my feeders--you lot are lucky! Ah flyingfinn! Reservoirs do it!!

Dunnocks playing kiss chase in the garden. Three of them, of course.
