I thought it was a similar sort of thing to Lingmoor Fell, you know, the fell massif has a given name, but the summit has a different one [Brown How etc]. Maybe people generically refer to Wansfell and it's understood that there are two tops in Wansfell Pike and Baystones. I dunno, just speculating.

From the web ... (so it must be true)
Baystones isn't the official "Wainwright" summit. The point he names as the summit is slightly lower than Baystones, which is a short way beyond the wall to the north of the Wainwright summit. Of course, AW recognised that himself and did say the highest point was the one to the north.

Seems there's 5m height and a wall between the two 'summits'

also ...
Wansfell/Baystones has been resurveyed a few times and has changed status and location a couple of times over the last few years.
At the moment there are three tops:

Wansfell Pike 482 metres. This is the top listed in Wainwright. It's also listed in Birkett's list as a summit. This summit was also originally listed in Alan Dawson's work on Marilyns as the Marilyn summit, but new maps indicated that Baystones was a bit higher, so the Marilyn was moved there.
Wansfell (Baystones) 486.9 metres (who's a nerd now..?) is the current Wainwright summit (but my view is that a Wainwright is a Wainwright and the old summit 482 metres is the Wainwright) - Its also the highest point on the hill and is a HuMP, a demoted Marilyn and a Birkett.
A little way North of this summit - over the other side of the wall, is Wansfell (Baystones) 486.1 metres. This is a Birkett.

Thanks um - all clear now :)

Agree that a Wainwright is what the Old Guy said it was, not what some whippersnapper now decides is a better top.

Hmmm, where did you find that info um? I've just checked on the DoBH and it attributes Baystones at 486.9 metres as the Wainwright and Birkett, of course Wansfell Pike is also a Birkett. I can find no record of WP as having Wainwright status.

Interesting that there is a question mark regarding the Marilyn, I'd have thought the height difference was sufficient for it to be unequivocal. My Relative Hills (Dawson) is at home, otherwise I'd have my geeky nose in it right now. *must shift library to work* :-)

Got it, ta.

Just poking around some more and found this on Walk Lakes:

"Note with care that the Wainwright of Wansfell is called Baystones and is clearly shown in Far Eastern Fells on page "Wansfell 4" as being on the south side of the wall crossing the ridge, where the Birkett of Wansfell is on the north side. Interestingly the OS 25K map displays a spot height of 487m (536 yards) north of the wall. Which one(s) you visit is up to you, enjoy though!"

I guess that aligns with what you found regarding the "true" Baystones summit and the Wainwright. I've got a great file written by fells guru Ronnie Bowron that lists all the "Wainwrongs" of any significance, but this actually isn't one of them. I guess it depends how precious you are about getting the precise summit vs. the Wainwright proper, I've learned that lesson over the last few years. I remember going to Hartsop Dodd and there is a massive cairn at the summit, but the WW is a few yards away and is actually an ancient fence post or something.

So, maybe VP was right :-)

Bobs and FF were on Wansfell Pike over the weekend. I don't think they hung around long enough to make copious notes though.
