Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

@larkim if they could make it so athletes can't see it that would be great. Not sure that's possible though.

It’s very common to have a line showing record pace in swimming events. Of course this excludes the spectators who are present in the stadium.

But the difference with that CGI line is that it isn't "there" in every shot. If the lighting was IR then (just like a remote control pointed at a digital camera) it could show up in every shot, every angle without having to put an overlay on top. And you could provide "wavelight glasses" to those in the crowd to see it too.

I suspect wavelights in the championships will stay after this debut though. Just because that's often the way things go; unless there is a huge athlete and fan backlash. Maybe they can find some tweaks that will satisfy those who feel it influences the racing or limit it more.

I need to find time tonight to watch some of the heats etc to see for myself though

Yes, the fact that they don’t bother to show it when they don’t think it’s useful is a really huge issue. How very dare they!

Meh, I'm trying to say that there's a "better way" than just CGI overlays. Swimming is easy to film, it's mostly one side-one tracking shot. So the "line" is there for most of the race.

Track running use multiple cameras throughout the race which could mean you see the wavelights only on the home stretch if they deploy the same sort of CGI overlay. I'm guessing it's because it requires calibration through a fixed point camera, and the tracking cameras on the bends etc wouldn't fit that spec.

It's a personal view, but if there are wavelights or a simulation of wavelights in use, I want to see them throughout the race, not just along the home or back straight. I don't think that's unreasonable?

I've no issue with the lights or the simulated lights only being on display when the record is within reach, which is the way that swimming use it. But that wasn't my point.

Wavelights better disappear for championships. Let the racers race, how fast they're running doesn't matter. I wonder whether someone is getting a load of money for this though.

That's what happens when a medal is hung on the neck before the race!
