I'm planning on my first duathlon in August at Newmarket. It's a 3m-14m-3m event and I was feeling quite cheerful about the whole thing until I looked at the pics and times of the 2011 event and now I am feeling horribly insecure. Everyone seemed to have really beautiful racing bikes and funky outfits. I am planning on wearing my usual running gear and using my much loved mountain bike, although as a concession to the event I was going to get some road tyres and remove the toddler and his seat before I set off. Am I going to look like an idiot and get laughed at? What is a good time for a 14m bike ride? I am reckoning on doing the runs in about 20 mins each, although the second one will be longer as apparently my legs forget how to run after cycling even small distances. Has anyone got any advice, or know of any good websites? Everything I have found so far is geared towards triathlons. Thanks!

You will not be the only person on a mountain bike, and you won't be last (especially if you're running *that* pace for the run sections), and nobody will laugh at you. Enjoy it

I did my first one last year and at the time I didn't have a racing bike. I did it on my hybrid and in running gear. Nobody laughed, in fact I got lots of supportive comments as they zoomed past me on their posh bikes. My saving grace was the running as I did a lot better there than on the bike.

I'm dithering over one in 4 weeks time, it's a 5-20-2.5k split, road based cycle. Stupidly i stopped cycling to work when the heatwave came along & have failed to restart, so my fitness will find me out! At my only other duathlon, an off-road & mtb affair, i would have been dead last were not for the kindly bloke who cramped in T2 & let me crawl ahead. I've never been anywhere near last at a Tri, i think the duathletes are the *real* hard bastards

Well, I'd run for a bit, then cycle for a bit, then run again for a bit

*la la la I can't hear you* I like the idea of duathlons as I'm a crap swimmer, but I'm equally crap on a bike and running and if I even thought about it I'd be needing a new bike - best not go there
