Got my first decent dog bite yesterday.
I was only walking, and now I have a big rip in my best trousers, and a small leg wound.

Moral of the story: Don't let a small barking dog get BEHIND you!

Sorry to hear that - hope it's not too painful. What did the owners of the dog do/say about it?

Sorry to hear that. Have you had it checked and cleaned out properly? Dog bites that break the skin need medical attention as they can lead to infection.

Ross - as Pinks said if it's broken the skin you should get prophylactic antibiotics.

Yeah, I've had a few over the years but have learned through having my own dogs how to handle a dog that is showing aggression. Shouldn't have to because if they do that they should be on a lead. For future reference, ask for the owner's details and report to the dog warden. All dogs should be insured, not just for accident/illness but also for attacks by or against them. If its reported and the insurance company is made aware it will impact on future insurance policies for the owner. Sadly, not all owners are responsible enough to insure their dogs, in which case all you can do is report it to the warden with a good description of dog and owner.

As said above, make sure it's cleaned and kept clean. It's going to be red and sore but look out for tracking and overt warmness around the bite. My last bite was a corker but no antibiotics, just a good clean and some butterfly stitches and all was good.

Any dog attacks should be reported as there may be a pattern in a particular area or with a particular breed. Uncontrolled and aggressive dogs can be a menace. As a farmer I find this a constant issue with livestock and it's worse of course if they develop a taste for people.

As OM says most owners have 3rd party insurance as standard if they have insurance against vets bills.

And yes get medical treatment for wounds. Dogs have unmentionably disgusting habits ( and I say that as an owner of a number of dogs)

Good advice all round with regards the medical stuff.

In terms of behaviour, I will disagree about dogs developing a taste for humans. For dogs biting from aggression is behavioural (fear related) and a last resort. Unfortunately once a dogs at that point it is almost important to get their reaction down the ladder of aggression.

Certain breeds do nip, grab and mouth as part on their inbred behaviour. I believe collies are notorious for herding nips.

As for reporting. In the UK if itโ€™s dog on person, the warden will tell you to go to the Police. The Police will deal with it, if reported, under the Dangerous Dogs Act.

To be fair, I read "developing a taste for people" as a tongue-in-cheek comment.

The last time I was nipped at by a wee dog it found itself (almost inexplicably) on the other side of the road. There may or may not have been a size 9 bootprint on its arse.
