I'm starting this now because I have to be up and out of the house early tomorrow to catch - or indeed jingle - my first Newt of the year.
This is the ANTI 'What are you giving up for Lent?' thread, and we are now entering a fifth glorious year.
The rules are simple: instead of giving up something, instead of self denial and hair shirts... DO SOMETHING NEW! It can be anything, big or small - a whole new career or at least a pastime, a haircut, eat something you've never tried or cook/bake something different. A new book, music. Take up the drums! Rediscover a love of piano playing, learn to tango.
Or just notice something new - the first daffodils, hawthorn blossom... ducklings in the pond. Sit in a different chair, sit on the floor! Sing a whole song right through ...LOUD!
There are loads of possibilities and Fetchies amaze and delight me every year with the Newts they Jingle*
*Newt Jingling was the result of a mis-typing by Gimme Medals of 'new things' that I seized upon as an apt description of what we do ... somehow it stuck.

My first newt is to change my snacks from biscuits and chocolate and buns to fruit. (I shan’t be giving up the HXBs)

And we're off - great start from Dio.
Snacking on fruit instead of bics and chocs demonstrates that you can - if you want - re-imagine (correct word eludes me) a traditionallish Lent give up for ... just DO something positive and life enhancing instead.
Hurrah!

I think it is going to be more challenging than giving up alcohol.

Just don't see it as some sort of penance, Dio. I couldn't do it because I don't like enough fruit or fruit enough. But I could do cheese, or pickled cabbage, or peanut butter and plain bread or something (if I was actually hungry).

I'm in. I met five new Fetchies (ie ones I hadn't met before) on Saturday. If I could have arranged it so I was meeting one a day from today then that would have got me off to a good start - but I'm giving it some thought.

My newt jingle is being at home on the first day of Lent on a school day. The governors will today decide who my successor is (interviews taking place is why I’m staying at home today) and so this will be the first time of many.

I’ll give you your Saturday exploits, Baroness - especially considering the whole Archers Adventure was your idea and your organisation.
And just to show a new thing can be quite mundane in itself... on my way to my big Newt today I’ve had to use a contactless card for travel. First time for me - it’s usually me codger’s bus pass.
