Derek Pringle's book finished and consigned to the dustiest recess of the bookcase

Surprised how little International cricket he actually played. 30 Tests and 44 ODI's over an 11 year career. Not surprised how ineffective he was as an allrounder. Top score of 63 in Tests and 49 in ODI's, hardly the new Botham.

Fascinating to read about life on the county circuit before the advent of coaches, teams basically run by the captains.

Who is today's equivalent, Nicho? If we consign Ravi Bopara to the past (or Sussex, is he now?!) - although I suspect Ravi was better with the bat by a distance. Is that Pete Trego at the door... must go... ;-)

Good question Groucho. Can't think of an equivalent in today's game. Remember he played in the days before central contracts, before "team England". Selection policy was a revolving door, players axed and brought back in the same series. He was also pigeon holed as a home Test player, not touring much.

If I had to compare to any modern player, it would have to be a bowling allrounder, so maybe Bresnan?

I might get that Pringle book, your description reminds me off Simon Hughes' first, i.e Gatt ruled the roost, so they ate and drank a lot with added nets for his batting.

I would think there isn't a modern equivalent, they're all good all-rounders now, Stokes, Buttler, Bairstow, Woakes, Curren(s), Livingstone, WIlley, etc, etc....they're all good.
