Commuting to work by bike

I have commuted to work today :) Changing rules mean that it's likely to be the last bike commute of the year, so I'll have to find other excuses to buy new kit ;)

Cycling is still allowed ? If you are now WFH, you can still cycle to work. I did that this morning :-)

Hello. I've only just seen this thread.
Hybrid bike with lunch and work clothes in an Ortleib pannier bag.
I get changed in the toilet at work.
7.3 miles each way and always into a headwind going home.
I used a shorter route during lockdown but two 270 degree roundabouts with main A road traffic make it a bit of a challenge now.
Sweaty cycle gear goes into the pannier bag to brew during the day and I put it on again to battle home.
What I know about bikes would fill the back of a large stamp.

And I have a new bike. Can't commute with it yet as no pannier, but will spin the wheels tomorrow.

I manage a headwind both ways most days. An easterly on the ride to work is always a westerly at hometime!

Unsurprisingly this thread seems to be inactive.

My bike is a bad state of repairs and when I took it to a bike shop the cost of repairs meant that a new bike was looking most cost effective. I enquired this morning about our cycle to work scheme and apparently this has been withdrawn following HMRC guidance as people cant actually cycle to work which I guess makes sense.

So my options are:

1) Find the money for a new bike
2) Find the money for all the work that required (almost as much as 1))
3) DIY

So my question is, for someone who has zero idea what they are doing, could I get a new chain and all the chain type mechanism and safely fit it myself and also replace cables etc, or am I just asking for trouble and a botch job ?

There is a nice thread about commuting to work by running, and there are loads of terrifying threads about bikes and cycling which are about carbon and grams of weight and lycra - not this one: how to dry your kit, how to carry/store your work clothes etc. and some bike specific stuff about best mudguards to minimize wet and dirt and maybe some stuff about cycle paths, safety, simple bike maintenance etc.

And if you declare yourself at the outset as:
A. Total bike head, train lots, do bike races/triathlons and the commute bit is just a way of getting extra miles in and is done at full bike training pace.
B. Bike for fitness (either with running as main sport or not) and like to do bike in lycra, at reasonable speed, certainly always shower necessary!

C. Bike is firstly a mode of transport, essential for the commute, sure a bit of fitness is good, but it's secondary. Safe, reliable and clean are the priorities.
