So, I've just bought the Frappé. My other bikes are both ten years old, so I'm allowed to treat myself to a new one, right? Especially if I'm going to enjoy my commute more in the winter as a result?

Excellent! So the one with internal hub, and a belt?

How long you gotta wait?

Question from me - I'm a regular bike commuter and usually leave some stuff at work and use a pannier for the rest so I ride in proper cycling kit (may as well as I have lots of it!). Now I'm mainly working from home and have also brought coat/shoes home I'm trying to work out what to do for my occasional trips into the office when I will also need to carry a laptop (which I don't usually do).

We can dress down when we're in the office now, so I'm looking for some semi-smart trousers which will stand up to 5 miles each way meaning I don't need to use the showers at work/carry a change of clothes (the commute to work is downhill so I don't work up much of a sweat). Something like these rapha trousers https://www.rapha.cc/gb/en/shop/mens-technical-trousers/product/RDT03XXBLK, but for women. Does anyone have any ideas?

Is there nothing you (don't like much and won't miss!) that you can leave hanging on the back of the office door to change into at work YP?

I have an outfit in the drawer at work.

a dress, bra, knickers, tights and shoes. I have a 3 wears rule, then I change it over for a clean set, which I swap on a car day.
I feel like i don't even know myself sometimes!

I have a pair of Swrve cycling jeans which I love and look quite smart enough. Highly recommended. But also I still keep a pair of chinos hung up in the office, so that they are there when I need them. I go in about once a week.

Acteryx do the A2B pant which are supposed to be great, but I'm not sure there is a women's version (And if not, why on earth not?)

Yeah, given the way the weather will turn soon, I think you're going to need an office stash to change into and use a waterproof backpack for the laptop/underwear?

Are these too casual?

velocitycyclewear.cc

Thanks for the link to those Raphas, by the way.

Problem for me is that I have to wear a suit. I have ties, jackets and waistcoats at work, currently ride in with shirt in a bag, and depending on the weather, suit trousers either on or in a bag with some 'activity' trousers on instead.

I used to own two pairs of amazing blue cycling chinos that I got from the middle aisles of Didldidi (probably Aldi), but sadly I had to get rid of them when they no longer fitted me. I used to wear them virtually all the time.

I found that there was no limit to how casual I could push things. People follow convention and may comment initially but no-one actually cares so if you don’t mind standing out a bit, go for it.

Most of the office was wearing shorts and a t-shirt through the summer by the time I left my last job. Having been smart office wear and some in suits and ties when I joined.

I usually do leave stuff at work, but it makes less sense if I'm only going in occasionally. Not least because I've recently dropped a load of weight so I don't have many clothes that fit me at the moment. I need to buy new stuff anyway so it may as well be practical.

Deegee - those look promising.

About This Thread

Maintained by HappyG(rrr)
There is a nice thread about commuting to work by running, and there are loads of terrifying threads about bikes and cycling which are about carbon and grams of weight and lycra - not this one: how to dry your kit, how to carry/store your work clothes etc. and some bike specific stuff about best mudguards to minimize wet and dirt and maybe some stuff about cycle paths, safety, simple bike maintenance etc.

And if you declare yourself at the outset as:
A. Total bike head, train lots, do bike races/triathlons and the commute bit is just a way of getting extra miles in and is done at full bike training pace.
B. Bike for fitness (either with running as main sport or not) and like to do bike in lycra, at reasonable speed, certainly always shower necessary!

C. Bike is firstly a mode of transport, essential for the commute, sure a bit of fitness is good, but it's secondary. Safe, reliable and clean are the priorities.
