Well, perhaps. Although I've bought my other two bikes based on sport, and I'm looking more for something with the minimum of fuss.

Looks a steal to me. For a steady 5 mile commute you probably don’t care about sportiness or speed and durability and practicality is a big bonus.

Found a women's version on sale online in a store in NL for €550. So I'm dubious about the RRP. Just doing some more reading. It'd be nice to get the hybrid tyres off the MTB and use it properly off-road again.

What's 5 miles to you? 15 minutes?

I'm sure there are less grand daddy/more sporty looking hybrids with panniers and mudguards out there..... on a similar low fuss spec.

Decathlon always has a decent option.

Funnily enough, Gooner, that one was also on my shortlist.

I'm being swayed by hub gears, though, having just had to leave my current bike in the workshop for six weeks to have my rear mech replaced for the third time.

That is what I'm after, though. Upright, rack, chain guard and mudguards.

The hub is possibly around 150 quid by itself I think. These type of bikes tend to be a bit pricier in the UK than abroad. I’m not saying I believe the full extent of the discount but it looks a reasonable deal to me.

What’s the benefit of hub gears? (Please don’t roll your eyes, I’m interested)

About This Thread

Maintained by HappyG(rrr)
There is a nice thread about commuting to work by running, and there are loads of terrifying threads about bikes and cycling which are about carbon and grams of weight and lycra - not this one: how to dry your kit, how to carry/store your work clothes etc. and some bike specific stuff about best mudguards to minimize wet and dirt and maybe some stuff about cycle paths, safety, simple bike maintenance etc.

And if you declare yourself at the outset as:
A. Total bike head, train lots, do bike races/triathlons and the commute bit is just a way of getting extra miles in and is done at full bike training pace.
B. Bike for fitness (either with running as main sport or not) and like to do bike in lycra, at reasonable speed, certainly always shower necessary!

C. Bike is firstly a mode of transport, essential for the commute, sure a bit of fitness is good, but it's secondary. Safe, reliable and clean are the priorities.
