I think Wobbling's right. There was a thing my wife was telling me about - it was either on the BBC or in New Scientist - about military simulations. They were testing helicopter ditchings into the sea. The normal human response was to panic and flail around indecisively, even with trained military personnel. The way around this was to repeat the exercise and repeat it and repeat it until taking the correct evasive action was second nature.
