Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

I cannot think of anyone less likely than Bing Crosby to be besieging anything. "Yare" means "quick, brisk", or "easily handled, manageable". A boat description which can apply in very different worlds. (I'd rather be on Bing's than Odysseus'...)

Bing Crosby wasn't in The Philadelphia Story - I think it was Katherine Hepburn that used the word yare

I enjoyed 'Body of Proof' - shame they killed it off after three seasons (the first and last of which were short).

So Bing Crosby and Katherine Hepburn made a movie about spreadable cheese?

Fascinating. We should probably have been discussing this on the relevant thread however.

In other news, I went down the library and obtained the hardback of The Overstory. This runs to 'only' 500 pages, albeit with a tiny font size. Maybe the hardback is missing the ending?

I'm not sure whether or not I'll read it yet, but the main task is done: i.e. preventing another library user getting their hands on it.

Yes, lets take all the 'good' books out of the libraries so the plebs can't get their hands on them.

I don't want anyone dirtying it, that's for sure.

It did occur to me as I almost put my shoulder out lugging the massive thing back to work that there's a certain irony in a book about Saving the Trees that probably takes a good two elms to make one copy...

I expect the books in the library smell funny, but better than the ones in the charity shops.

re: Overstory - I read it in less time (3 weeks) than it took me to read the Leopard (1 and a half months) :-). Sometimes page length doesn't tell the whole story.
