Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Staniforth uses SM a lot. It’s all about self promotion as he’s an author, speaker etc. I don’t know if the BG attempt was self promotion, although he does raise MH awareness through it.

He’s also really unlucky. Two attempts at Everest. One ended up in an avalanche killing Sherpas and ending the attempt. The 2nd was during the big earthquake in Nepal. He had to be airlifted out alongside his team.

TBH I don’t actually know how much of an accomplished runner/adventurer he is.

Interesting that he is held up as a great motivational speaker who inspires people. Personally I'm at a loss to understand why I should be inspired by someone who's poor understanding of a challenge and his own level of preparation for it was such that by Wasdale he was already 4 hours behind his target schedule? Reading his website I get the impression of someone who is good at setting ambitious targets and poor at actually achieving them but very good at getting a lot of misplaced kudos and sympathy on SM. Sure he's had some bad luck but based on his track record I suspect that has probably only served to obscure a likely failure anyway. Meanwhile lots of folk quietly go around achieving far more on a weekly basis. Personally those are the people that motivate me!

He also failed to do the three peaks record last year(?) which involved significant his whining on SM.

Although I am a self confessed SM junkie I have only had 3 days access a month since May and haven't missed it at all... who knew?!

He did the national 3 peaks a couple of years ago and ruined himself by the end.

I thought he got the record.

But was ruined afterwards.
