Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Just been looking at his schedule and he has an 0200 arrival time at Buttermere, so he's lost his 3-hour advantage. He's currently skirting around Seat and he's got that horrible descent off High Stile to go .... I'm not even sure that what is depicted on his tracker is actually on the ground, OS maps show a path through Burtness Wood but I wasn't able to find it when I was looking at alternate routes off HS for the ATR. More likely he'll go down the FGR line to Horse Close, it's chokka with bracken too. I'll go for an 0030-ish arrival at Buttermere, his schedule allows for an hour's power nap and 0300 departure, but I expect he'll plug on.

I don't know the descent off HS but to be on schedule he has 2 and a half hours for 3k. Is the descent really that bad, even in the dark?

Well, I think it is. I went down there the other day (the first time for a few years) and it's faintly cairned, but lots of rocky shelves and boulders to contend with, then as you get lower there's some smooth sheets of rock that are a nightmare when wet. Once you get to the wall line it's bracken hell and it's difficult to pick any kind of a decent line down to Horse Close. Probably easier in ascent ..... anyhow, he's going down there now, I am curious to see if he does pick up on his intended line.

Hmm, and he's strayed off to the N trending W already. I wonder if he's going to go down to Bleaberry Tarn a la ATR ??

That has to be his intention, otherwise he's seriously off course. These are the ATR ascent/descent options:

That's interesting because I was just geeking and wondering about ATR lines and decided that I needed to go and look if something along the lines of your Bleaberry Tarn line was feasible because it stood out as a good line to cut the corner. Ditto the ascent line. 😀

To be honest I pinched this off Little Dave, he and Pup H were the first ones to go this way on the ATR to my knowledge. The stock GF guidance was to go via Red Pike for safety, although it's not visible from the tea room.
