There isnt a right answer, some do and some dont.
It may heal quicker if you pop, it is less likely to get infected if you dont.
If its on the ball of the foot then it will likely pop on walking anyway.
Best of both worlds is a fluid absorbing dressing such as duoderm or granuflex. I believe compeed does a similar job. Slap it on and let it suck the blister fluid out and hopefully you get the decompression without the exposure.

You're not supposed to pop them but how many times to do you see programmes about ultra races and the medics getting involved in draining blisters! i'd say pop it especially if it's sore to walk on but make sure you use plenty of antiseptic.

actually Boots do their own version of a hydrocolloid dressing which is cheaper than Compeed

I do exactly the same as Muddyidiot, except I pop whilst soaking in a bowl of warm water and savlon solution which stops the pain a bit, then do the cutting and pop back in the bowl. Heals perfectly and also the cut edges dry a little crusty and are great fun to pick at the next day lol!!

LOL! @ SpeedyMel. I forgot about the dry crusty edges......a great way to while away a spare 15mins! My colleagues in the office don't appreciate it though

Permission to share blister horror stories?
Well I will anyway. Had them in my Ironman marathon (never usually get them, but the cause was 35-36 deg temps and the gallons of water I tipped over myself).
I could feel the foot getting more and more cushioned as this blister grew, then it exploded which felt like warm p&ss in the shoe but releived the pressure. Only thing was then it felt like I was running on raw flesh and I could feel all sorts of bits of skin flapping and sliding about. Tenderly peeled off shoes and pink socks after, foot was like raw meat with thick skin rucked up and concertina-d around the sole of my foot. Left it as it was so sore and couldnlt take any more pain, but the skin kind of semi-healed and grew back really odd where the rucked up bits were half healed, half dried up. Was pulling lumps off for weeks.
I have no pictures, sadly.

I just use a pin to drain and then cover with a plaster. Sometimes refills, but then I just drain again. I've never cut the skin away unless it's flappy.
