But do you, Grep? Even in the context of a work driving assessment? Genuine curiosity here, as I can't remember ever seeing anyone use the hand signals other than cyclists.

Hand signals were part of the driving test when I took mine in the seventies. They were essential as cars didn't have flashing indicators, just a little arm, about 12 inches long that came out of the door pillars, very difficult to see, especially in bad light. Slowing down, or stopping was waving the right arm up and down, out of the window.
