But the last time (2022) the decline and drugs/homelessness/crime problems had absolutely exploded. It was always there but avoidable (‘don’t go to the Tenderloin’ etc) but all over the city now. It’s not safe and feels profoundly uncomfortable so I won’t be going back.

Never spent Christmas in New York but assume it is like a giant superpowered version of a Boston Christmas - brilliant but sodding cold and snowdrifts you could bury a small house in. Dullest thing to do in Boston in Winter? Spend eight hours on a plane at Logan waiting for the runway to be cleared of snow.

Nasty underbelly but what US city doesn't? Chicago is flipping awful for trying to sweep it under the carpet. The US is in a rather big spot of bother. I rather fancy Munich as a Christmas destination. Anywhere in NZ would be fun right now.
