Pops in to say, for a rather devastating commentary on Dickens laying it on thick, dip into Trollope's The Warden and look for Mr Popular Sentiment.
I do however love this book!

I always thought "red-clad Santa" was a Coca-Cola thing and that the original guy was more clothed in green (although I admit, that might play into a Robin Hood-style fantasy...

I love that bit in Trollope, he really sticks the knife in in quite a catty way.

Group members may be interested in this morning's edition of 'In Our Time' with Melvyn Bragg. Quite a breezy overview that avoids getting too mired in matters academic - in my opinion, of course! :)

Dickens's Ghost of Christmas Present is clothed in green, Angus. If that helps.

I’ve found a series of podcasts on the BBC Sounds app that are a reading of the book. They were recorded a while ago but the app says they will be available for over a year. Useful if you’re like me and haven’t got round to reading it yet. I listened to it while I was doing some gardening this afternoon....

Finished this last night. Although I knew the story, this was the first time I'd actually read it, although I have read a few Dickens' novels.

Have to say I really enjoyed it.

I gave it 10 because marking it down would be silly, like finding fault with Tower Bridge or Mount Fuji.

Turns out I didn't know the plot quite as well as I thought I did.

Brilliant short story, full of fun.

About This Thread

Maintained by McGoohan
"You boy!"
"Me, mister?"
"Yes you young sir. What day is this?"
"Why 'tis St Choosinator's Day, sir.
"Splendid! St Choosinator's Day! Then I am not too late! Boy, take this shiney sixpence to the nearest independent bookshop and buy something absolutely impenetrable from the Booker shortlist."
"Sir?"
"And a goose. From Waitrose. Quick about it now."

It was always henceforth said of him, that he knew how to keep St Choosinator's Day well, if any man alive possessed the knowledge. May that be truly said of us, and all of us! And so, as Dan Brown observed, God bless Us, Every One!
