Intrigued by its being a Thing That People Do. Don't other people come along and pinch the coins, at least the higher-denomination ones? Or is it like a wishing well, periodically emptied and the coins given to charities?

There's a few in Yorkshire. The Janet's Foss walk from Malham is covered in them. It's mainly 2ps and they are hammered into the wood at a depth that would mean more effort to retrieve them than they are worth. And they rust quite badly too.

Columba - it seems quite a common thing. Normally a ‘special’ tree (fallen tree) in the wood, not just random and a few coins in lots of trees But the coins are generally low value and hammered in. They wouldn’t come out too easily, not that I’ve tried.

They are indeed trees that have had coined hammered into them. There were a few on our walk. They're on fallen trees, and the coins would be very hard to get out.
