I don’t think I’d fancy trying to wing it with ITG opposing. Bad luck on toe

I'm a super nice opponent! My own PhD defence was horrible and I never want to put anyone through that!

I have 90 minutes to quiz him on his thesis. It's more than a formality - the student needs to show they really understand the issues at a deeper level and can think beyond what is written on the page - but a supervisor should never let it go forward if the student is not ready. (I don't think my supervisor even read my thesis.)

I am happy to report he sailed through his test lecture and the defence and my interrogation, I mean, gentle questioning, will begin in 45 minutes. Just enough time to catch up on fetch and get a cuppa.

That all sounds good :) I didn't mean to suggest it was a formality. Mine certainly wasn't :)

No, I didn't meant that either but I wonder if some people think it is just a big party and the hard work has already been done. For sure, most of the hard work has been done but there is a lot of stress on the candidate. There is a big difference between spending 3 years at your desk writing something and getting up and being quizzed orally on it. (We lawyers are probably more equipped for that than in some other disciplines.) BUT, if the supervisors have done their job, it should not be dreadful either.

This defence is online which is a shame for the candidate as he does not have his friends and family in the room for support and we can only have an "online" celebration (hopefully!) tonight. But more important for him to complete on schedule. I expect I will meet him in future and can give him a small gift and buy him a beer.

In the Catholic Church, anyone being considered for sainthood had a Devil's Advocate, who was required to make the case against. Don't think they had to have a goatee beard and horns.

I thought I’d do an easy 4 miles on generally level roads to recovery from yesterday’s 7. Ended up doing 5 on dead legs. Need to ease of next week.

I was wearing my Denbies 10M finishers t-shirt.
