I did my LSTD* yesterday at Spring Lakes. Front crawl, three hours in the water, giving me 3.92 miles (although it had a feeling of being a bit longer, as a 'round-the-edges lap' is reported to be a mile, and I did four and a smidge of those).
*Longest Swim To Date
Fuelling-wise, I had an ordinary day on Saturday, and was well-rested with 72 hours since my last run, and *cough* two weeks since my last swim. On the morning, I had some toast at about 6.30am, then we swam at 9am.
My first thoughts of food came at exactly 2hrs13, but it didn't feel like a need. Main points of discomfort were (a) needing a wee [I simply cannot let go whilst crawling, and was too stubborn to stop]; and (b) a bit of neck rash. I feel as though I countered the latter by sighting less, and a few tips from the legendary KatieB about neck positioning and stretching mid-swim.
Perhaps these helped distract me, but I completed the three hours without mid-swim fuelling nor any sense that I was struggling to maintain the effort level.
The splits in my log mostly back this up. Swimming splits are always pretty flaky, aren't they? My watch is set to record one every 500 yards, and they mostly start with 12:XX, including the last whole one...
fetcheveryone.com/t-21983529
It was part of my plan to play it by ear with the fuelling. The option was there throughout to climb out of the water and grab something - so I wanted to see what my body would need and when.
Once finished, I did feel pretty hungry. I wolfed down a chocolate milk and four big chunks of delicious pineapple straight away; then when we got to the cafe about 10 mins later I had an Aero brownie (nom nom nom), a sausage roll, and a few fistfuls of chips left over by one of our gang.
I've worn a HRM on previous swims, and my typical swimming HR is about 130bpm. If I was running, that'd be a very comfortable pace. I know the bands are likely to be different for swimming, because of the horizontality - but I'm wondering whether I'm swimming at the sort of pace where my body is able to use a greater proportion of fat (of which I have a decent supply), hence not feeling like I've hit the wall on longer swims.
Leftover symptoms are a bit of stiffness in the shoulders, some neck rash, and generally a bit tired - but actually feeling almost unfairly good on it.
It felt like good prep for the 9k, although we're expecting cooler weather, unknown chop, and so on. It'd be nice to discover at some point that yesterday I swam further than expected - but mentally, I have at least made a decent start on the third and final length of Llyn Padarn.

who upturns a nearly empty bottle of chocolate milk, waits five minutes, so that the last bits collect in the lid, and then drinks it carefully with two shaking hands, whispering "the elixir!" in an awed and expectant voice. Even if there's no-one around. And even if there isn't no-one around.
In fact, I'm pretty sure I'm not. My boy would be all over that, and I reckon Katie would at least humour me She is used to my freakish behaviour.
I earned today's elixir off the back of a very very hot 7.15 mile run, which was a very special one, because it took me through 15,000 miles of running, and got me a magnificent badge (only 663 previous owners):
The last mile was *jolly* tough, so much so that I had to give myself some little targets to keep running - to the next parked car, to the bench, to the lamp post. 15,000 miles in, and running can still give you a spanking.
I got home and made a sweat angel on the kitchen floor - it was deliciously cool.
I happen to have weighed myself before I ran, so when I'd recovered sufficiently to stand up, I weighed again - and found that I'd lost 4lbs, which equates to about three pints of sweat. Imagine! Three big glasses of water and the choccy milk and I reckon I've put most of it back now
Whilst I've got you... two things:
1) I've updated the Fetch Miles tables a bit. The 'fastest' tables on the home page are now restricted to miles that have a zero or positive gradient i.e. net flat or net uphill. And if you go through to the 'Fastest' tab, you can specify the gradient - so that if you wish, you can see all the mad downhills. Have a look here: fetcheveryone.com/mile.php
1b) There's a mile popular with bikers called 'Down the volcano', which is in the sea off the coast of Australia. I believe it's one of these 'pretend to be somewhere else' bike riding things, where an athletic American with very white teeth simultaneously tells you you're very special indeed and not working hard enough. Because it's in the sea, it has a gradient of zero, but the times people are getting suggest that it's a somewhat low resistance mile. If you know about this, and would like to do me a solid, let me know what sort of gradient this mile deserves.
2) Did you receive the June edition of the Fetch Monthly Update Email (feels like it needs a snazzier acronym than that - apply below). Your replies in this poll would be appreciated:

I've been doing some fooling around with ChatGPT. I tried asking it to write some code for me. It's pretty good at the basics. For example, if I asked it to write a function that computed the distance in metres between two latitude/longitude points, it would absolutely nail it. But as soon as things get complex, it starts getting caught up in technicalities. The specification for the code needs to be so clear, you may as well write the code. That's my experience anyway.
I also thought I'd let it try its hand at copywriting. It can be quite useful for things like "write this paragraph in fewer words". This sort of thing crops up when I'm trying to write concise descriptions for games, league tables etc. The rewrite often gives me some inspiration to change the actual text, although I find that more often than not, it loses some of what I consider to be the essence of the text. But seeing your words rewritten is a fascinating thing, and can get you thinking about new ways to express yourself.
Fun to play with, handy inspiration, but not something I'd want to hand over any responsibility to. Luckily I am in that position where I get to make that decision, but I have heard stories of copywriters losing their jobs to AI unfortunately.
I thought I'd give you a little challenge. I fed it a draft paragraph from the monthly update email that went out yesterday. If you've already read that email, you've probably got an unfair advantage. But if you haven't seen it yet, try this. One of these paragraphs is me. The other one is the result of me asking ChatGPT to simply "rewrite this better".

In my introduction this month, I wanted to address the issue of opting out of these emails. It's a pet peeve of mine that it's commonly accepted to bury this option in the email footer. You'll often find links to modify your email preferences at the bottom of all Fetch emails. However, today, let's bring it to the forefront. If you wish to stop receiving these emails, you can easily adjust your email preferences by clicking here. If that process becomes cumbersome with passwords and such, simply reply to this email and let me know your desired course of action.
Sample B
The first thing I wanted to tackle this month in my intro is how to opt out of receiving these emails. This is another bugbear of mine – it's sort of accepted that it's the done thing to hide it away in the footer of the email. Indeed, you'll find links to adjust your email consent at the bottom of all Fetch emails. But let's give it top billing today. If you want to stop these emails, you can adjust your email consent here, or if that gets you tied in knots with passwords etc, just reply to this and let me know what you want to happen.
Which one is me? And which one do you prefer?

It's the summer solstice on Wednesday, marking the midway point in our annual virtual challenge. So this coming Sunday (25th June) will be Everyone Day - the day on which we try to collectively log the highest possible mileage.
There's a totaliser on the home page, which will start looking a bit more interesting once Sunday arrives.
Anything goes - run, cycle, swim, walk, cross training (although you won't cover much distance if you're doing press ups).
There's a thread where you can call in and share your plans:
fetcheveryone.com/forum/everyoneday---june-25th-2023-62269/
And there's also a sweet badge for anyone who joins in:
Last year we logged 21987 miles, which is 0.88297658728 times round the earth. Can we get the whole way round this time?

On Saturday morning, bright and early, Katie and I clambered into the old jalopy-turned-bedroom and drove down to Shepperton to take part in the Shepperton 24 Hour Swim organised by Level Water.
We did this event last year (see my blog from last time: fetcheveryone.com/blog/3/2022/6/450919 - I will try not to repeat myself too much).
It feels like quite an expensive event. It's effectively £240 each... £40 to enter, plus they ask for a minimum sponsorship of £200. Neither of us wanted to plague friends for sponsorship, so it seemed that the only option was to 'sponsor' ourselves to do it. According to the financial statements lodged with the charities commission, just under a third (31.7%) of the £1.1M income that the charity made in the last financial year was allocated to the provision of swimming lessons for disabled children. That certainly IS a lot of swimming lessons, even if it's quite a lot of not-swimming-lessons too.
But we were there, and undoubtedly lucky to be able to swim, eat cake, and sit in the sunshine at our leisure.
Katie looked lovely as always - it's a rare swim where she doesn't get out of the water happier than when she went in:
We also got to hang out with a bunch of other Fetchies including the wonderful LindsD (I will let her decide whether to share the pic I took of her with eyebrow extensions caused by swimming hat and goggle combo). She arrived with hugs as warm as ever, and was a cheerful and ever-positive presence! Two out of two Fetchies in this household would recommend.
I must also share the fabulous GPS trace generated by Nightjar on one of his swims (but his were all pretty bad!). For context, the swim route is made up of three buoys in a try-to-do-anything-but-a-triangle shape of about 400 metres. One swims out to the first buoy, then completes as many triangles as possible before one's hour is up. It leads to a pleasant 'samosa on a string' shaped trace. Unless you're Nightjar, in which case it looks like this:
The event started at midday, and my first of three swims did not come until 5pm - so I spent a good deal of time sampling the many cakes and treats on the communal table. I sampled the baking whilst ACTUALLY baking in the sun. Going back to LindsD again briefly, Katie and I both agreed that we must get the recipe for the peanut-y squares she brought, as they were delicious - but I also do NOT want the recipe, because they are so delicious. Schrödingers Squares.
It was something of a relief to head towards the water just before 5pm. I'd decided to do a 'skins' swim (this means 'just your cossie', and not 'naked') as the water was a reported 21 degrees. It was still quite a shock to the breathing when I got in, as it was my first skins swim of the year. Towards the back end of last year I'd swum skins in 15 degree water, but there's no substitute for acclimatisation. But once I got my breathing under control, and got going, I managed five samosas and enjoyed the cooling effect of the water.

Here I am emerging from the primordial swamp like a fish that's learned to code:
Out, dried, and it was time for me to do my bit for the team. Here's this year's pizza stack:
it's bigger than last years I think It was fun driving carefully back from Dominos, and even more fun stuffing my face with my pizza!
My next swim was at 11pm, and for this one I'd decided to wear my wetsuit. The skins decision earlier meant it was nice and dry, and it gave me a bit of extra warmth and security in the water, as I've never swum in the dark before. Here I am, gimped up:
For safety, each swimmer had to swim with a light attached to their goggles, and a tow float. And the tow float had to have a light on it or in it. My tow float is bright pink, so with a blue light inside, it produced this rather lovely purple glow:
The overall effect of the lit-up swimmers in the water was lovely:
My swim however, was a grumpy arse-face for at least the following reasons:
1) the zip on my wetsuit was playing up, so it slid down and I got lots of cold water washes into my suit. After putting up with it for a while, I managed to get hold of the string and yank it back into place.
2) I made the mistake of using my regular goggles which must be slightly tinted, like sunglasses. Those people who wear sunglasses at night are clearly the coolest people, but they can't see shit.
3) I got swum into, and also did a bit of swimming into. It's not a great deal of fun at night. Some folks had attached their lights to the outside of their tow floats, which made them far less bright - and in some circumstances the float had flipped over, so the light was underwater and of no use at all.
I still managed to knock out a regulation five samosas though, even if I was not smiling one bit when I got out:

Being in a lake for an hour does tend to wake you up somewhat, so I sat around our camp for about 45 mins, and got myself a lovely hot chocolate (who ever brought the hot chocolate powder, thank you!). Then Katie (who had been resting up in the car) turned up early for her 2am swim, so I grabbed the car keys and set off for some rest clutching a boiled egg to eat on the walk back to the car park
Sleep came pretty quickly. The air mattress was decent enough, although in hindsight I should have taken the time to move the driver's seat forward, as I was a bit compressed by the end. Katie jumped in at 5am, and I dozed for another hour before she kicked me out at 6am in time for my 7am duty.
I needed the whole hour to get my act together - first waking up; then finding a spare portaloo to have a think; then clambering into my wet swimming undercrackers and wet wet suit. I might have had another hot chocolate. I think I had one of the excellent Malteser squares provided by Loggerhead and Leatherback (I must stop calling them Loggerback and Leatherhead). There were bodies strewn all around our gazebo in various states of consciousness. And still a mountain of cake.
With maybe 15 minutes to go until my swim, Katie re-emerged and walked down to the start with me, which was a lovely bonus. At some point here, I decided to make sure I put my night swim behind me - so I marched purposefully into the water, turned and waved at Katie, and submerged myself in the water before heading off at an almighty lick. It's all relative of course. I would not have beaten Eric the Eel over those first hundred metres, but I was certainly purposeful.
And I managed to hold on to it! My usual plodding cadence for front crawl is about 51-52 strokes per minute, but I came back with a 56, AND I managed the legendary sixth samosa. It was as close to a perfect hour of open water swimming as I have ever enjoyed. I even did a couple of farts on the way round, and giggled as I felt the bubbles trying to escape. On beaching myself at the end, I did a little slap of the water like they do on the telly - not too much, as I didn't want to be a dick about it - but enough to outpour the joy I felt.
fetcheveryone.com/t-21932039
I handed over the baton (it's not really a baton - that'd be stupid) to Katie and gave her a hug which she did not want to let go of, because she was onto her fourth swim, and a wee bit tired! But she smashed it anyway. And I managed to fit in a little ad for Fetch on the colouring in board:
The final hours went pretty quickly, and soon we were breaking up the camp, and working out what belonged to who. Whole layers of undiscovered food were unearthed on the communal table in the process! Barn un-raising done, and LindsD seen safely into the correct seat of her car, we weaved our way home. Slept through most of a movie (Blades of Glory, great film), ate fish fingers, chips and beans; and climbed into much needed bed at 8.30pm.
There's a bit of recovery for us both now, then the BIG swim is coming on July 8th. Intel from a triathlete we know says that Llyn Padarn was very calm and a lovely 18.7 degrees this weekend. That would be very nice, thank you please.

Here's what the old WSW page looked like:
A few things were bugging me.
1) if you've been playing for a while, your match history gets huge.
2) likewise the list of current games - how useful is it to have it *all* right there?
3) the blue colour scheme. I do quite like the blues, but it doesn't match the rest of the site.
4) the whole page is a bit messy.
Enter the new version:
1) only your recent matches are shown - but there's a link to see more (and I can turn that page into a bit of a stats delve at some point in the future).
2) there are links to the top 10 games - but if you click any of them, the whole table of matches then becomes visible.
3) done away with the blue colour scheme.
4) hopefully a bit neater now, although I could probably take that further and line up some edges.
and also:
5) there's a new permanent link to the 'efficiency' table. It shows who grabs squares at the quickest rate during this round of matches.
6) there's a brand new 'big hitters' table which shows who has claimed the most squares this week from a single training entry. Look who is third
A few bits have fallen off the front page. The positions of your buddies in the rankings has gone - but if you go through to view the full ranking table, they appear there.
I hope you like it, and that it encourages you to take another look at the game, if you've been away a while.

A thought on the 'big hitters' table, though - I seem to remember a while back that somebody managed the full 225 in a single activity? (And I'm fairly certain that I've covered more than 20 - I even have a route on my Garmin called "WSW-Lunch-30" 🤣)12:53pm, 9th Jun 2023 -

In running terms, if April was a bit of a flounder, May turned into a "I'll do what I want" sort of month.
Pleasingly, things were fairly consistent - I got out regularly. Two little apathy gaps, but better than last month. And an 84 mile total, if repeated often enough will give me my 1000 for the year. No spare miles in the bank in case of injuries, but you know what? Does it matter? Probably not.
I tried to work on running at a more relaxed pace, so the overall average is a bit slower, and the beats per mile a bit crapper - but I just sort of stopped bothering as far as those sorts of targets are concerned. Instead I had plenty of fun trying to be competitive in Who Squares Wins. My longest run of the month felt like a breeze because I was focusing on getting the directions right, and trying to remember which side of the road I needed to be on to snag extra squares.
Let's run through my May goals very quickly:
1) Let's stick with sub-1300 for beats/mile in an attempt at realism. ❎
But nearly. 1305 average without any real focus.
2) Get back on the easy pace, with 70% in Z0&Z1.❎
Only 60%, but *shrug emoji*.
3) Total run mileage > 100.❎
Nah mate.
4) Three tempo runs. Most of my good UTMOST times expire this month, so it'd be good to come up with some replacements.❎
A couple of runs where I pushed the speed in the second half. They were fun.
5) Build OWS swims to a two-hour session by the end of the month. ✅
Yes! I managed two of these, and they felt pretty good. I managed to be a bit more consistent in May, with six swims totalling 11.7 miles. The lake water has been warming up since my first swim of the year at the start of April.
6) Any sort of bike ride ❎
Lol. Maybe June will be my month.
7) STILL DON'T GET INJURED BECAUSE I'M ENJOYING MYSELF ✅
Yes! As always, the most important win.
Here are my goals for June:
General
Don't get injured! And think about the bike!
Running
Just get out there as often as I can, no matter what pace or distance.
Swimming
Spoiler alert, I've already done a 2.5 hour swim on Saturday. Thanks to a swim on Thursday too, I was briefly top of the Fetch swim league for June! The long swim on Saturday went very well - about 3.5 laps of the big lake at Spring Lakes in Long Eaton: fetcheveryone.com/t-21905293
I felt like I had a bit more energy in the tank to keep going if I'd have needed to, although as the day wore on it was increasingly obvious just how tired I was. By 10pm I was asleep on the sofa with my head lolling onto my son's shoulder as he did some gaming. So I need to bake in some down-time after any long swims in June.
The Big Welsh Swim is likely to take me at least 3.5 hours to complete, so my plan is to knock out a couple of three hour swims in June.
The other issue was a stiff neck. It's eased off quite a bit now, although still a bit uncomfortable, and was pretty tight for a few days. I figure I can:
(a) think about my head position and keeping things loose and relaxed. The more I can let the water support my head the better; and if breathing can be led by my shoulders, hopefully my head will follow without too much neck work.
(b) try to work on sighting less often by worrying a little less often about zig-zag swimming, or the presence of other swimmers. It's less of a problem at Spring Lakes because it's a big lake and the swimmers are sparse; but Box End is about half the size, and much busier - there's barely a swim goes by without one of our swimming group with a story about a swimmer ploughing into them from the side.
(c) try to sight bi-laterally. At the moment I always sight when I breathe to the right, which has left me feeling quite asymmetric in the neck region. Anything that can help my neck stay comfortable for longer in the water will be very welcome.
In non-neck goals, I also want to make sure I have the best possible GPS trace to look back on after the BWS. A Garmin on the wrist spends at least 50% of its time underwater during front crawl, so the traces are always crap. My plan is to stick my phone in a waterproof container and bung it in my tow float. This will have the added bonus of allowing my dad to track my location when I do the BWS. He is pretty nervous about me swimming all that way.
We also have the Shepperton 24 hour relay this coming weekend. There's a team of six of us who will each swim for one hour at a time before handing over. Last year, I asked for sponsorship, because I'd not really done anything like that before - but this year it feels wrong to do that. We still have to raise money for the (very good) charity, but I will do a donation myself. Otherwise it feels as though I'm persuading folks to cover the cost of me enjoying a weekend hanging out with friends. If you want to seek out the charity independently, it's called Level Water, and they provide 1-1 swimming lessons for children with disabilities.
Anyway, here I am testing out our sleeping arrangements for the weekend (yes, I am being dramatic, and yes I know this is not good for my neck):
Instead, it would be awesome if you'd consider signing this petition. The aim is to stop a plan to divert water that has passed through three landfill sites into Shepperton Lake:
