Brighton Marathon with Mixed emotions! Firstly happy to be running after disappointment of missingLondon Last year ( Sorry again to mega training mate Swerver )Secondly- Lucky to have had fantastic training this year, with a great plan from OM and the perfect training partner lollepop. Thirdly some frustrations with race (later) Arrived late Sat am at roughly same time as Gingerwand and LP. They had ( along with LL, DD and their friend Karen booked Travelodge which has to be the perfect location with the start 60 metres away! We were in Jury's Inn (as were E'O / Elaine and Curly K and family) unpacked and set of for the exhibition which was ok for getting number but perhaps as i'd only seen London previously was a little disappointing. 5pm saw us head of for to Prezzo with Mark Moz, Shelley, Erin and Jason , GW and LP, which was great preparation ! E'O /Elaine and HJ and I had breakfast together, then met CK and off we went to "headquarters" to meet the others opposite the start. Off into the field to do the customary queueing for the loos for do's. GW of course was true to form. HJ and Elaine took the bags to the trucks, then down to the start and with a quick word from Paula Radcliffe away we went.
Race plan was to run approx 8:50's. For some reason I never quite felt right. At about mile 8ish abdo felt a bit dubious. then seemed to ease. But by mile 16 or so was getting some pain in left calf. LP was very supportive (as ever) and we poddled on. However I felt it tighten more at about 19 ish and slowed. Sadly the dream finish of crossing the line with LP was not to be! Slowing seemed to help a little , but then the tummy hassle returned . At mile 22 ish i realised i should have stopped at the loos at mile 21! Fortunately another mini block appeared soon after where by a time difference occurred between Garmin time and Chip time - no doubt due to lack of signal for 3min 41seconds! mixed (e)motions! Amazingly felt much better then so set off again , to be spurred on with a "well done Ken " from Zoe Ball sitting on a wall. Sadly that didn't las long as calf finally said "not doing this anymore thanks" so then had to somehow coax a finish. Met up with everyone at a "W Tree" to swop stories. Some great runs from all WJ entrants. Then off to the pub to celebrate With everyone.Mega! Overall pleased as still able to claim a PB, but disappointed not to have a) finished with LP, b)not managed Sub4.Very Lucky to have had some great training sessions with lots of WJ's( esp LP, GW, OM, CK, DD, LL, E'O ,HH,Mahooba, trotters, javthrower et al) the camaraderie has been superb. Potentially this was the last one......

Bless you Rken, you finished in a respectable time nonetheless. The marathon is a blliddy long way and is an unpredictable foe. Disappointed I understand but be proud

gingerwand
was it lollipops talking that made you drop back? good effort Mr and defo not your last on being a witness to how you run over big distances

Marathons are mean. You only get that one day chance. However, you got a PB which is brilliant !!! Most of us spend most our running lives chasing them and you've (worked hard) and caught it! A very good time Rken... I suspect too you may have a season of more super running now over with this solid Winter training

Javthrower
