Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

Hurden 18 mile club champs race. Lets start with the good news it s a new PB ! - had to be as first time doing 18 miles ;)

Needed 20 today so did a 2 mile warm up and then pondered over pace to run, debated a steday first lap (race is 9miles x 2) then pick up pace, but ended up trying to go more even throughout, decided 8.15m/m seemed resonable so off I went. As no one running with me decided to take ipod and have a sing song in my head for the race.

Start was a bit quick but thats normal, then was fairly comfy, at mile 3 it was headwind and rain and a large hill, hard work but kept steady ish, this was followed by a mile or so of long flat side/head wind. Its never a good sign when you look round and there is a wind farm that you are going around, kinda indicates that wind is plentiful in this area.

Lap gets easier from then on and after mile 7 where there is a hill it is then all downhill or flat and tailwind, bonus, feeling good pace well up and taking shot blok every 2 miles from mile 6, feeling good at this point.

At the end of the lap there is a stupid arrangement where the 9 milers finish and the 18 milers go round a cone in the smallest area possible, and to help matters a water stop is thrown in for good measure !

As you run back onto the the second lap you get people still coming in from the first, no 'lanes' or anything just that silly sidestep guessing which way the runner opposite is going, ridiculous !

Second lap I had made myself aound 60secs (from the 1st lap) by going a bit quicker than planned, I know I was going to lose some of this in first few miles but it all went wrong, hill and headwind were to be expected, slowed up and lost time, then my ipod stopped, tried to start while on run but ended up stopping to sort, no worries I have loads of time. Water had got low so at mile 14 I stopped and filled bottle at water station, more time lost, I then went to get a shot blok and they had gone, assumed fell out while sorting ipod, great no fuel either now !

Legs were feeling tired but felt ok, then as started what should have been the nice easy last 3-4 miles the weather came along and kicked me square in the nuts, hail, sleet, rain, wind, they all came to play. In shorts and short sleeve top my body soon got cold, side of face went numb. Felt crap and wanted to stop but plodded on, eventually got some cover in last mile when coming into village and did the 18miles in just under 2hr30 however got the course at 18.07 so missed that officially as well.

The reward for this effort, wow orange segiments and a bruised banana to go with my not needed cheap plastic water bottle, thanks very much. Got to wear a nice silver foil blanket for the hike back to HQ.

All the above said I am actually really happy with average pace of 8.20m/m for a 18 mile race which was done after a 2+ warm up,I also got 6 points (I think) in club champs as only MS in front of me was Jeff and Martin. Official results in and 49th overall and 5 sec quicker than Garmin time.

Will I be back next year, I doubt it, the course is a bit boring and a bit exposed, however on a nice day good for speed. A good turnout for WJ and some team and individual prizes as well as yummy lemon cake from DD. Five weeks to go, one big run to do and some sily little 16 and 12 milers to squeeze in, bring it on.

Hey Jude
Nice one Swerver - didn't have your usual sidekick to slow u up lol!
EO
Well done for conquering the cold and loss of fuel, yet still pleased with pacing, good luck for the next biggie!!!
hurricanehamlyn
Well done, setting off to do second lap sounds awkward, don't they no not to take you near the finish?! Good pace and horrible weather :-)
Old Man
Well done Mick, see my comments on CurlyK, he runs it as a business and its his only income, hence its all bare minimum. The main thing was its was accurate and timed and you did it!!
Curly K
Great write up and overall pleased with pace. Rough second lap with wind and hail today and I agree with the rubbish organisation :-( But as you say just 1 more long run before the big day - good luck!
dingdong*
Stop your moaning, you got a banana, water bottle and a foil blanket what more do you want!!?? Great run and thank you v much for the lift.
Marts
Well done on the PB :)
kevlar
Well done looking good for VLM,thanks for car push
Marky Moz
Where were they handing out the foil blankets ? I had to even ask about the water bottles as they must have been running short and werent handing them out ? Greta run though mate and not too many more long runs to do now
Rken
Excellent stuff, its all looking good for a good time on the big day!
gingerwand
that old chesnut when tired; 1, must adjust ipod. 2, stop for water.
gingerwand
i agree Oldman about making money hence simplicity but how much will he make when no one turns up next time! He has a good product (course) which is fast and if he's that much of a business man he should make the 9mile a 10 and see them flock to enter.
WJKat
Good running swerver sounds like you had a lot to deal with! At least you got lemon cake and tea at the end!
Javthrower
Goood run. Not ideal conditions and disappointing when goody bag provides no light relief at the end. Agree with gingerwand on makiing it 10 as there aren't many 10s around
