Notes & Comments

I know that this is a great result, but my overwhelming feeling is one of disappointment. Of what could have been... of what I thought I was capable of, but on the day I just couldn't produce.

Sub 3:30 may sound like it is only 4 minutes (and 3 seconds) away, but it felt like a lot longer than that with those kms between 35 and 40. It was just too much for me to do at my first attempt (the rest don't count - I was nearly ready this time).

Anyway, we will get to the problems... I started well and felt very comfortable. First couple of kms were almost spot on - I managed to not go off too fast like I have done in previous marathons. The first 10km was 48:39. This is probably 1 minute quicker than ideal pace, but I was not complaining, all was going well. There had been some uphills and a bit of downhill but crossing the harbour bridge as always was the highlight:-)

Kms 11 to 20 were solid and didn't cause me any problems. It was over towards (and in) Centennial Park - reasonably flat and felt comfortable. Time for this 10km was 49:14. Again, pretty much spot on. Maybe 15 seconds too quick. I was very pleased and felt comfortable throughout.

That takes me to my fastest ever half marathon... 1:43:08. I remember the time as I looked at my watch. Previous fastest 1:48:58 and I had hoped to do 1:45 spot on. So nearly 2 minutes too quick, maybe this is what caused the problem later on?

The 10km to 30km was back towards the city and was still feeling good. It was probably slightly downhill, but there were definitely some ups and it was at about 26km that I had to leave Neal behind who had been running with me the whole way. It was a shame, but he felt the need to break and only ended up 6 minutes behind me so he pulled it back. The 10km was 49:23 so still looking at perfect pace.

The problem came soon after this. I could feel that it was hurting. The next 2km were very downhill back to Circular Quay and near the harbour and I felt it hurt. I knew to do another 10km at that pace was going to be hard (if not impossible) but I had to give it a go. I managed to hold it together for 33 and 34 - but these were very flat under the harbour bridge and I was still losing it.

Then it went uphill. That sucked. I always hate this part of the race - it has caused me problems all three years I have done the race. This year was no exception. I had fuelled well - one gel every 7km, but I just couldn't do it. It is mentally tough, the wall really seems to exist and I just couldn't get my legs working properly. Hence the blowout here. This 10km was 55:28. The slowest by a long way and the whole place where the race was lost for me:-(

It is hard and I will learn from it, but I am just not sure how to get over the fact that this point of the race will finish me off.

The last 2.2km was quicker (although my Garmin has it slower than the timing mats...) and I have to be honest - I did know what Simon's time was and how fast I needed to go to be under that - sorry Si! I went with all I had and managed to somehow find enough to get to the finish in 3:34:02. The fastest I have ever run over this distance (or anywhere even close to this distance).

I'm sure I should be happy, and hopefully I will be sometime soon, but for now I feel like it is a missed opportunity.

My understanding is that the course basically starts and finishes at the same height, but that there is approximately 680m of gain. Apparently I could pick a different marathon with less gain to try and get 3:30, but I want to do it at Sydney. Let's see where I am in another year.

For now, I have to remember it is a PB by well over 21 minutes and it is pretty fast for someone who not many years ago was obese and could barely run for a bus. Now to move on and start training for the Melbourne Ironman - it is t-minus 184 days until then. Swimming and cycling are now the order of the day. If I refocus and can get down to sub 90kg then I could really do some damage to my time in the Ironman.

So, for a third year in a row I have done the Sydney marathon - approximately 23kg lighter than I was two years ago and 49 minutes and 50 seconds quicker. All in all a good couple of years (plus a wedding in the middle!!!)

Well Joe, you put in a magnificent performance. I fully understand that you are disappointed that you didn't match the target you set yourself. However, you may find some comfort in the fact that Simon (who was following the race live) simply could not believe the turn around you managed in the last 2 and half km. That took some amazing determination knowing that your primary goal eluded you. Brilliant run.

Fantastic write up and result. You have put in so much work and you are definitely in sub 3:30 shape. The Marathon is such a long way and so many factors affect your final outcome. You really have run very few road marathons and from the sounds of it no flat ones. Your pacing was great, first 5k are always a bit hectic and you reined it in well. I saw the splits live from 15k onwards, was worried with the 5k to 35km at 5:11's so was gutted when I the next 5k split. Absolutely incredible to get your chin up for the last two km with a PB in the bag and your A goal gone. Hope to lose the Hedges record to you, and a performance you can be proud of it. This race won't be your PB forever.

Happy to lose the record not hope. It's hard commenting on your phone.

Cheers guys. It really is nice to read these comments. It's a shame we aren't all in the same country sometimes... running a marathon at the same time would be awesome!

I am slowly getting over the disappointment and I agree with you Si - I don't plan on that being my forever PB - I seem to still be going down (in terms of weight and time) and as long as I can continue that I will be happy!

Sorry I took the Hedges record like that... But I knew the time I needed and I dug very deep in the last 2km to reach that!

Great write up Joe. It gives a really good account of how you were feeling throughout your marathon. It looks like similar pacing to the Manchester marathon that I ran (except you held it together better in the last 10k and didn't need your hamstrings stretched by a spectator on the side of the road!). I think that given time you will be seriously proud of your efforts. You love your running (and all the other exercise that you do) and you will have lots more chances to break 3.30. And once you have done that I'm sure you will only readjust your targets to aim even lower! incredible progression (times and body) over the last couple of years - very inspiring to watch (even from 10,000 + miles away!)
bigfatjoe
Cheers Luke. I didn't feel like I held it together at all for the last 10km!!! I am pleased with the improvements, I just always want more! You are right - if I get under 3:30 I think I will adjust the goal again to lower, but I will stick with that for now. Looking forward to some of us being in the same hemisphere at some point and all beign able to race together:-)

Cracking result Joe. I dont think you should be disappointed at all, fade in a marathon very hard to avoid and yours came late and was pretty minor!! I have no doubt you will smash under 3.30 soon...and you have strength and determination like no-one else I know, the skies the limit!
