Inov-8 X-Talons saw me OK last winter in the snow.
... and same as Chris, I've got gloves on when I'm still in short sleeves. Then the arm warmers go on, then long sleeved tops last. I like to be able to get coolness to my core once I start running. Rarely wear a jacket as it'd come off and go around my waist after 5 mins.
I'm too hot in a hat too but wouldn't suggest non-natural fibres if static electricity affects your hair as it does mine.

Running faster keeps you warm.
Seriously though, don't overdress. So many runners I know stick everything they own on, at the first sight of a cold evening/morning, then get 5mins down the road and are too hot.

I wasn't talking about layering in my post BTW. Long-sleeved tops are my last resort and I prefer to use arm warmers. I don't understand people who wear tons of layers; I guess they really feel the cold.

Running on the fells is a different matter of course.
Not many fells in London though.

Picking up on the above... Any recommendations for gear to wear for running/plodding in the Scottish hills over the winter?
I don't run fast enough to keep warm (and also terrified as to what would happen if I hurt myself and couldn't move quickly or at all).
I'd like to have some kind of jacket that keeps me dry (from the outside at least) and something that won't get water-soaked on my legs. I don't do bare legs, and mostly run in cheap H&M jersey leggings but these just get sodden if it rains. I can deal with this mostly but not being wet and cold at the same time, particularly for any length of time.
Don't tell santababy but I *really* want to join in the WHW training weekend in January/February, even if I'm only doing 10 miles and everyone else is doing 30+ !

My winter wardrobe consists of Helly Hansen long sleeved baselayer with race t-shirt over. One-size fits all gloves from the pound shop. Tights. Usual socks. Trail shoes if snowy/icy as I go off-road. Buff. Windproof jacket if really cold. The Hellys are the real expense. The rest are last winter's end of season stuff.

No to mini heatwave. It buggered my Mablethorpe marathon chances.

Aye, DeeGee, 'twas as hot an October day as I can remember. When Crosby on Merseyside recorded -17.6 deg. C a couple of years ago, four layers, beany hat, double gloves.....and *shorts* kept me quite cosy
