Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

What do you know today, that you did not yesterday?

I get this wrong too, much to the annoyance of Nellers. I think most things are a kayak and only something unwieldy and nerdy with a one-ended paddle is a canoe?

Nellers
A canoe is basically anything that you "paddle" rather than row, so propel with a paddle that isn't attached to the boat like an oar is, although there are canoes that are sailed and poled (like a punt).

A kayak is a specific type of canoe where you sit (rather than kneel) and have a double-bladed paddle. Think (in a very un-PC 70s way) Eskimo kayaks.

It's actually more blurry than that and there are lots of grey areas and blurred borders but the overall definition of "canoe" pretty much stands. Once you attach an oar it's not generally considered to be a canoe, although I'd bet there are some exceptions I don't know about.

All of the above can be both unwieldy and nerdy or graceful and sublime, dear Greg. It depends very much on the skill of the user. ;-)

Thanks Nell. Told you I always get it wrong.

Allegedly (according to Punt and Dennis I think so not reliable) the oldest joke in the English language:

What's the difference between Joan of Arc and a canoe?

Of course, you should never go out in a canoe on a cold day.
Everyone knows that you can't have your Kayak and heat it

[I think the 15th century original said Noah's Ark rather than a canoe ;-)]
