Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

What do you know today, that you did not yesterday?

I was just going to say that I'd found an exception to my rule in Austria Vienna, but I've just found out that their prefix in German is actually "Austria".

FK Austria Wien.

[Of course, they were named Austria Memphis for a while, how many other professional football clubs were fully named after a cigarette brand?]

Galata palace and Fener Garden don’t sound quite as romantic or mysterious in English and of course no-one called Joe Green could have written an English opera 😉

Fortuna Sittard - but I think that's just Dutch for Good Luck.

They were formed by a merger of Fortuna 54 and Sittardia. Fortuna 54 doesn't have an English wikipedia page, but it does have a Dutch one. Applying google translate to that page tells me that the clubs founder, Mr Joosten, "built the team up by teasing shivering chaste chaps".

I know of two Fortunas in Europe, Sittard (NL) and Duesseldorf.

I can't find any evidence of either being named after a cigarette company.

That doesn't mean they weren't, Brighton and Hove Albion were (apocryphally) named after a brewery in the city that owned shares in one or other of the founding clubs that came together to make the modern team.

Fortuna the Spanish cigarette brand only came in to existence in the 1970s and seems only to have sponsored motorsports teams (according to wikipedia).

I know for a fact that Lucky Strike sponsored Steve Claridge in the 1996 Football League First Division play-off Final
