lol at _andy "walk the final 50 miles". That "walk" included 8 min/mile action from miles 92-95 and 7:xx in the last half mile into the finish, for a 21:57 time, 21st position, having overtaken 9 other finishers in the last 25 miles (and nearly leaving his support runner struggling to keep up with him, never mind support him!)
One heck of an impressive "walk"! Well done Andy - really inspiring guts and determination. Was a real privelege to see you finishing so strongly, after such a tough setback early and mid race. Many congratulations. :-)G
Well done Andy and respect for getting to the end. Like the walk the last 50miles!!! And the good point for you in your time of looking back and weighing it all up is that you beat my time of 1997!!! there is always a bit of silver lining eh?? Have a well deserved rest and DOMS doesn't go near to explain the pain you will be feeling!!!....I can feel the stress fractures just now!...ouch!!
Very lucky to be able to finish well over the last five hours - not sure that the pain eased though. I think it was just that everything else hurt so much, it didn't matter so much anymore. That was one huge positive for the day. Others include that I'm not in too bad a shape now. Ok, three toenails are going to waving goodbye soon, but there are no blisters and no chaffing issues (no vaseline used either). I've had worse in half-marathons before.
My abs still work - again, I've been unable to cough after previous races without holding onto by stomach for fear that it would collapse (imagine that scene in Alien for what I mean). My right knee is fine, not sure of the left since it's totally eclipsed by my ankles. These no longer exist. My ankle bones have faded completely into the swelling down there and I'm at work, so no namby-pamby RICE stuff, just a big dose of 'get-on-with-it'. Luckily the compression socks are black.
Silver linings indeed. And some truly emotional, magical memories for life.
Just caught up with the last 100 or so posts as I start the journey home. What a fantastic race it is. Such heroic performances out there from mrs Shanksi, Dave k mike and andy amongst many others. And also my runner Jon mackintosh who showed incredible will power to finish in 31.01. Would have dipped under 31 hours but I took him the wrong way a mile before braveheart car park and lost 5 mins before doubling back.
It has really whetted my appetite for next year. All roads lead to milngavie as they say, so will be doing lots of training runs on whw and similar trails over winter if anyones interested ...
