But is it time lost, or does it just appear that way? Will you be moving as well, with a blister as you would if you'd prevented/addressed it?
I agree, sitting down for a picnic is bad, in fact I've chased runners out of checkpoints for doing this (channeling Henk). I was aiming more for taking care of things, instead of assuming 'any' time stopped is bad.

I've just re-read my blog and notes from the Shires and SPires (35 miles) I did a few summers ago. THat was supposed to be the start of lots of loooong runs, but I got PF and my dad got ill and, well here I am again almost from scratch.
Anyway - what I've learned from that is to be sure of nav skills and trust them - I think I wasted more time triple-checking every corner than I did stopping at checkpoints.
This is so good that the thread has woken up again -
thanks for your input guys
-I'm sure there will be many more questions over the next few months

I think the thin with CPs is to take as long as you need ... and no longer. This might be 30 seconds to fill a bottle, grab a flapjack and GTFO; or 30 minutes to eat a meal, dry out feet, change socks, restock, etc. Each is valid when it is needed.
I'll not detail long loo stops to sort out dodgy guts, but they can also be a very positive use of stopped time!

oumaumau, sorry, I've not explained myself very well. I think flanker has put it perfectly.
I remember on an early Ultra, Northampton to Tring, I didn't spend enough time getting myself sorted at a checkpoint and regretted it all the way to the finish. Basically don't fanny about but do deal with the things that need dealing with.

I’ve never had to have a poo during an ultra including my 38 hour plod along the Kennet and Avon canal. I’ve done over 1,000 miles of ultras.
I think the key is to have efficient stops. You can faff for 5 minutes wasting 4 minutes or spend 30 very wisely.
Not putting too much in drop bags helps with faffing

I’ve also never done a poo during an ultra , including the 52 hours of spine flare last year 😱
