My thinking is a well planned and clearly labelled route removes the majority of brain effort, so you can concentrate on just riding hard, not getting lost etc.
I'll have a look at the 520, thanks.

every ride should not be hard !!!!!
I train almost entirely alone and I do draft legal races it hasnt held me back
Just go and ride the bike then ride it some more, do most of it EASY
specfics for speedwork
depends on the distance you are racing
BUT and I shall say it again
MOST OF US DONT REALLY NEED SPEEDWORK WE JUST NEED TO RIDE MORE

Oooh, I forgot. GMDS, IBS.
UTRAB - I find myself in the same position. Local clubs (both cycling and tri specific) either start too late in the morning or do evening rides, neither of which suit my family commitments.
It ~can~ get very lonely out there, but actually getting out is the hard bit. Quite often I'll look at the plan and think - "Three hours alone, f**k that. I'll do 90 minutes and see how I get on." Then once I'm out it turns into a longer ride, just because.
A friend has recently got the wahoo kicker cycling computer and rates it highly as it synchs with 'map my ride' and similar. I'm sure the garmin is good.
Incidentally, in my experience, the hotel is not a good place to ask for advice. All you get is sarcasm, "MTFU" derivatives, and people waving metaphorical penises at you. There's a really good thread (ironically, populated by mostly the same people) called "Basic Triathlon Advice for those who don't know" that has a lot of experience and friendly chatter.

Ginger, PoD has just used the phrase "COCK RUB" on that thread. Might be best to give it twenty minutes.

I disagree with g1r 998 para 5 in every possible way.
I've never received bad advice on here - or ill-intentioned advice anyway. There's a line between banter and smacktalk, and we very, very rarely cross it - I tend to spit my dummy if we do.
It might take some repetition to get people to notice it's a serious request for advice - but this thread - and the senior/more talented/more experienced members thereof - have never knowingly misled, or failed to offer help/advice/support.

Hard, could be just a factor of going longer, not necessarily faster. Thanks for the tips.
@Ginger, thanks for the heads up, I'm an early riser so I expect I'll be out at first light, hopefully back by 9am. So as long as I have a 50-70m route planned and loaded, I can just follow and ride to the appropriate effort levels.
520 is 200 quid, seems reasonable. I have a Garmin fenix 3, that you can load courses into which I tried last night, which seems to work, but you just have to follow an arrow, not mapping, directions etc, so not great.
