Daisy's right, they're not as dangerous as the Russians are making out. Depleted uranium slugs have been used for years in close-in anti missile defence systems (Goalkeeper, Phalanx etc), likewise in GA aircraft like the A10 and suchlike. Deadly though, they have a lot of kinetic energy behind them.

They're extremely unhealthy if you happen to be inside a tank that's not by one. I'm given to believe, as LD and NE say Russia are talking smack quell surprise. Talk of an imminent counter offensive in the Guardian today. Guess they feel Putin has got enough of his own soldiers killed in Bakhmut. |

It’s not the radiation but the toxicity. I don’t think I’d be happy about living in an environment that had been bombarded with the stuff. But I’ve not really looked into it.

That's also true. I believe that there are areas of Iraq where they have problems due to the large amount of depleted uranium slugs fired during the last war.

Well blow me down with a feather! Russia’s T-80BV main battle tank has been upgraded to feature the capability of firing depleted uranium shells, the Defense Ministry said ... The information that one of the shells has the depleted uranium core was confirmed to TASS by military expert, Editor-in-Chief of the Arsenal of the Fatherland journal Viktor Murakhovsky. "It has the alloy of the depleted uranium and tungsten," he said, adding that the open sources mentioned it as "the Material B." The use of depleted uranium ammunition does not violate any international treaties, the expert said. As reported by TASS in a slightly ropey English translation back in, erm, 2018. tass.com |

You mean it's massive hypocrisy from the Russians? Surely summer mistake? Also, just because it's can doesn't mean they have any to use, or the ability to make them. Any reports that T80's are in use? Thought they were still expending 72's? |

Not about the war in Ukraine but Ukraine-related. Sometimes only borshch will do. With all the trimmings: fresh warm bread, dill, sour cream, and whole raw garlic cloves. Not quite as good as my mother-in-law used to make in Zaporizhzhia but pretty tasty nonetheless if I say so myself. Це борщ! |

You know, my food vocabulary is poor but for some reason I know what dill is! I think it was probably because when I was at Meudon in the early 90s there was a large Russian woman there who practically force-fed me summer borshch and there was always a liberal sprinkling of укроп ![]() |

I spent a pleasant summer term at Meudon in 1985. Very useful it was, and some interesting characters in residence as well.
