Third possibility is that there are mines floating around the Black Sea. Russia says Ukraine did it, Ukraine says Russia did it. Would be funny if the Russians were hoist by their own petard, though.

Mmmm, I'd be surprised if they were chucking sea mines around, dangerous things and highly likely to sink your own side. Personally, I'm absolutely convinced that the Moskva was damaged by a shore-based missile attack and not necessarily the "Neptun" variant as claimed by the Ukrainians. There is a lot not being reported here.

Do you think the Ukrainians have received some better weapons than the West have said they have donated NE?

Not necessarily. How about those harpoon missiles we were discussing the other day? Just speculation of course.

Just been reading that the Moskva apparently had a 3-tier defence system, meaning it should have had a CIWS similar to Goalkeeper or Phalanx. This is after my time, the Russians really struggled with that technology in the past. I wonder why none of it was engaged? It really does suggest that they didn't see it coming.

NE, the story I’ve seen going around is that the best system may have been distracted by a drone. Which sounds a bit rubbish!

Yes, that's all over the military forums. Most people (myself included) are sceptical, but the Ukrainians have been achieving great things with their Aerogvozdika drone division, so I guess you have to count it as a possibility. The bottom line is this: Taking out the Moskva is a huge military and political coup and the Ukrainians will be seeking to keep the real details very close to their chest - a plausible explanation is necessary to satisfy the world.

Reports, not confirmed, say that the skipper of the Moskva died and only about 50 of the crew survived. If true, it's hard to keep that kind of casualty count from the public.
