I was diaapointed not to make the last AW but had to admit i'm not fit enough just now. I saw the pics and they looked amazing. What a grand day to end the race on.

Hello We are up for a week in a fortnight, and I've already planned most of what to do. I love walks, my husband likes it for like half hour and then is kind of done. I did get him up Helvyllen last time and he was only a little bit petulant. This time I want to get him up Coniston Old Man and Haystacks. The Old Man routes seem quite obvious, Haystacks there are too many options. I want to go from Buttermere rather than the slate mine but I don't think I will get him to walk the 9 miles round Buttermere/up Haystacks route that I'd do myself. I've read talk of Scarth Gap but the Wainwright route seems to go the other way from the car park. Any tips on what is the best way? |

Also, is Fell Foot worth a trip in itself? (can't fit in parkrun before anyone suggests it) Was going to be a proper tourist and maybe get a lake cruise from bowness to lakeside and go on that steam train unless fell foot is the better option down that end of the lake?

Fell Foot is a nice place to go for a picnic beside the lake (or a swim in it) but there's basically not very much there beyond the cafe, some boats for hire and a gift shop. There is also the option of a small launch across the lake to Lakeside for the steamer pier and steam train platform. It's a NT venue so parking is free for members - don't know if that applies to you or not. To be honest, if it was my holiday, I'd be doing the boat/train thing you've suggested and maybe take in the motor museum at the end of the train line rather than make a trip to Fell Foot specifically. Can't comment on routes to Haystacks - the only time I went up there began with Fleetwith Pike then across the tops. |
