Sadly no NE I just remember listening as I drove and Maconie saying that was iirc Overhauling by.... I then tried finding it but at that time there was no playlist recorded. I didn't catch the band. I have even thought about getting in touch directly but to be honest I can't even recall if it was him or Charles and I could do both but thought I would pitch it here first. I appreciate I am just seeking the proverbial needle but it,s been bugging me for some years. Thanks for even responding. Just spend an hour googling to see if I could find anything, no joy, had Johnny Walker on in the background from 3 and realised its now nearly 1700 so moreclike nearly 2, time flies. |

Mmmm, tricky. Well, if it was played on mainstream radio by Maconie (who has good taste) then we will definitely know it, let's hope we can track it down in future.

Re. this "Northern Soul" in TV commercial thing: I realise this is a bit niche, so I will spill the beans as far as I know. 1. Do I Love You has been used by at least two commercials, the Happy Egg one I posted yesterday and KFC. 2. KFC actually used quite a few tracks in their advertising. These were: Bobby Garrett - I Can't Get Away Frank Wilson - Do I Love You (Indeed I do) Jackie Wilson - The Who Who Song Laura Greene - Moonlight Music And You Marlena Shaw - California Soul The Chi-Lites - What Do I Wish For The Flirtations - Nothing But A Heartache The Majestics - Funky Chick 3. The Felix cat food adds had several tracks associated with it, off the top of my head there was the You've Been Away track I mentioned yesterday and I Wanna Know by John E Paul. Probably others. 4. Adidas used a version of Why Can't There be Love by Dee Edwards for an advert 5. There are probably others |

The most striking out of that lot above is Eula Cooper and "Let our Love Take us Higher". That's hardcore, collectors-only northern soul and yet Sky use it to advertise? Very strange. On a slightly different tack, did anyone watch "No Angels" years back? I'm a big fan and have them all in box sets - that had a very northern-soul soundtrack to it. |

The show from May 2020 has a particularly fine playlist I was at Prestwich around 2001 the night that the BBC recorded a live session and Maconie was DJing. They also had that bloke who used to double up with Jonathan Ross on the Saturday morning show on Radio 2, forget name. |

Just a bit of trivia for you - Richard Searling was the man who broke "Tainted Love" to the British public. The story goes that he was searching for records in a Stateside warehouse in the early 70s and stood on a copy of Gloria Jones' legendary record, wondered what it was and gave it a play on his portable disc player. I guess the rest is history

I enjoyed the exploration of Northern Soul used by advertisement producers, Martyn. A particular bugbear of mine is a soundtrack chopped up for no other reason than the demands of the stopwatch. I * know* the next line or part of the melody!! Grrr! My search revealed that Maconie gave a Northern Soul DJ set before a Rugby League grand final in 2017. rugby-league.com From the article ^ "... previous Grand Final DJs Craig Charles, Shaun Keaveny and DJ Spoony ...." |
